Hey Scotty! Big fan! My dad currently drives a 2012 Hyundai Accent GS 155,000 miles with a check engine light. He is thinking about buying a 2014 Chevrolet Spark, 2LT, 26,500 miles, new tires, grade kept for $7,500 from friends of ours. He needs it to last at least a couple of years. Should he buy it? Would he be getting ripped off? Pictures included as well as KBB Value. Thank you!
With my 7500 bucks, I'd get a 2014 Corolla. One class higher, fuel efficient (up to 41 mpg), and 10 times more reliable.
2014 used a Nissan CVT and that car is rated at $1500-$6000 in the inflated Edmunds private party calculator.
I'd take the vin number and put it into a KBB/carmax trade in value tool. Odds are its no where near 7500.
I personally wouldn't even consider one for more than 3 grand.
I also want to note how lucky you were with your Accent, and you most likely won't get anywhere near 150k miles on an 8 year old Spark. The new ones were around 10 grand why pay 8 grand for one that is 8 years old.
Sounds like he's looking at leaping out of the frying pan into the fire.
that's the exact phrase that crossed my mind
So, he should only pay $3,000 AT THE MOST right?
Should he just walk away and forget it?
If he's willing to spend $7500 he should be able to get an older used Corolla which will be a much better car than a Spark.
$7500 is used Honda Fit money, isn’t it?
Drive the price down drastically or look at something else, instead.
Yes, Add $1000 and you are in latest gen Fit territory.
Is he a masochist?
You can get a lot better car for that money even in this market
How many years and miles does he expect to put on it?

Did I misunderstand? The price is $7500 and the trade in value is $2500? If so, don't even consider.
I would want to roast the Chevy Spark here but burning trash is bad for the environment.
@mod_man used to work at GM and he has some experiences with the Spark.
No, you did not misunderstand. It is being sold for $7,500 and the KBB trade-in value is $2,500.
The Spark looks like a throw away car to me.
