2014 Nissan Maxima

One of my dream cars is the 2012-2014 Nissan Maxima. I've been searching for a good deal. I've finally found one 2014 for $14,974 with 29,515 miles. I took my bluedriver on the test drive there was one code P0826 for M-Mode Switch. Can anyone advise on any knowledge of this vehicle, good & bad, so I can make a sound purchase? Full disclosure this and maybe the new Z is the only Nissan product I'd think of buying. I have an 07 Altima so imagine what I've been through. I've read Maxima's are reliable. Help!

Well if that model is your dream car, get one!  But not this one.  Don't buy a car that has a code IMO. Especially not a trans related code on a Nissan (or pretty much any other car for that matter).

08 Altima man. An Altima would only be reliable if it is a 3.5 V6 (maxima engine very reliable) and with a manuel transmission or at least the 4 speed auto. A cvt on a maxima is a recipy for disaster. Do your research, maintenance, and get a mechanic to check it out. Dont get that specific one wiht the code.

They are only offered with CVT transmissions, and the 2009-2014 generations were the worst made CVT's Nissan ever made. So your Nissan Altima would be the start of bad, and the Maxima the end of the bad loL. A 2018 2019 Nissan would be better in terms of reliability of the CVT. But you know you could always try other cars like Acura's Honda's etc. and maybe you will like those as well.

The maxima cvts are actually some of the least problematic of them all. The v6 ones hold pretty strong. The m mode code would actually lean towards a shifter not the cvt.  And I would be wary of some of those scanners I’m not familiar with blue driver but a lot of those scanners don’t communicate at the same can speed as the vehicle operates and can actually cause more codes and problems than anything else. That car sounds like a solid buy to me. If it’s a dealer just get an extended warranty if it’s a Nissan dealer that car should be certified which powertrain should still be covered

same! I really like those cars. The thing is that the CVT's are absolute piles of junk specifically in the 08-16 years of NIssans (the others are bad too but these are like 50k 60k miles go out kind of bad). Consider getting one from like 2018+ it will be much more reliable without that code. Also, if you find a 2019 Maxima with liek 70k miles, chances are it is highway miles, which is equivalent to 7k city miles. So you could pay less, get a better built car, a newer car, with less wear. If you really want that generation, get one with low miles like that (under 40k) and wihtout any codes. Get a mechanic to check it out and MAKE SURE THE TRANNY HAS LITTLE WEAR or else run away. Plus that is a rip off I could get that for 9 10 11k. If i do, I would follow strict transmission maintenance and sell it before 70 80k miles, then buy a newer one 2018+, which would have a better transmission. If you have the money, just lease a new one.


I don't mind working on a car. I just don't want to waste my time, money & effort on a car I'm not into. I feel after working on my 07 Altima I'm confident going forward especially with a car I've wanted for years. I'm also not interested in the newer models. Thanks for the advice


You welcome on the feedback! Just know that Nissan CVT"s are very complicated and will spend easy 4 5 6 grand to fix, but after that they are decent cars that are worth looking into.
