Hi everyone,
I am interested in buying my wife a 2015 or 2016 (or similar) low mileage Toyota Corolla.
I am hearing mixed things about this generation Toyota CVT transmission. Really looking for reliable...
Is this transmission time-proven to be reliable?
Is it problematic?
Thanks!!

It’s mediocre, not bad; not great.
do not expect it to be as good as the 4 speed that made during that time.
I see so many of them whine and begin to have issues before 60k miles but that’s usually just because of traffic jams burning up the belts and people doing my the completely bogus manufacturer’s service recommendations
if you chose to get it, replace the fluid every 20k miles using only the OEM fluid.
Thank you! This makes me feel like getting a 2013 Corolla instead...
Yep those where built much better!
The ones made before December of 2013, also called “Corolla E150” had either a 4 speed U140E or a 5 speed U150E. That was objectively the best that ever came out of Toyota and all you need to do to make them last is change the fluids. (Gearbox fluid every 40k miles and engine oil 6-7k miles)
Out of the two, the 5 speed is more durable and reliable.
CVT is still a relatively new technology all things considered. Not all the kinks have been worked out. I would like to think that Toyota is ahead of the game in this regard but I would do with the tried and true regular automatic. 200k ez. There have been complaints over the CVT for your years in the past over failed transmissions. I think it's luck of the draw with em still tbh.

If you intend to keep the vehicle for as long as possible and put as much trouble free miles on it, I would avoid the CVT. For me, it’s a dealbreaker on any vehicle that has it.
Yeah, I am thinking 2013 Corolla instead. Thanks!
just get a camry shouldnt be too much more. CVT should be decent same trans as prius from 2 decades ago. look around for a camry drives better
Toyota has the best CVTs. They haven't really had many complaints and the ones that they did have were strictly a software/performance issues, not reliability issue.
Thanks again for all of the advice! I have a 2013 Corolla LE with only 38,000 miles being shipped via Carmax instead. I feel a lot better about avoiding the CVT for now.
Even Toyota does not put CVT on its average and up vehicles which suggests that they believe that the CVT can not function well under higher load.
