2016 Volkswagen Passat Shifting Issues

Hi Scotty,

First I’d like to say thanks for all you do for the rest of us.

Now on to the car stuff. I have a 2016 Volkswagen Passat with 96,000 miles on it. It’s recently started having some issues shifting, some hard shifts when downshifting and hesitation when speeding up. It drives fine going down the highway. I’m taking it to the dealer for two recalls, one of which is a software update for something to do with the emissions system. Could that system be the problem when it comes to shifting? Also, the EPC light will illuminate sometimes when the transmission shifts gears. No check engine light though. Full disclosure, the transmission runs like a Swiss watch if I put it into manual mode.

Thanks for your help,

Chris

Hi Chris, I have a 2007 Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi DSG automatic transmission which is basically the Passat in a skoda skin it's all VW parts. I bought the car when it had 54,000 on the clock 6 years ago. It now has 109,000 miles on the clock.

I have a similar problem. Two years ago the gears started to hesitate as it went up through the change, it was mainly between 4th & 5th. With extra revs it would then go up. There was no problem with it coming back down through the changes.

I took the car in to the main dealer who could not find the fault. All they wanted to do was replace the gearbox for £4075.00 and even then they said it could be the mechatronic control unit which would be £2220.00 to replace. When the DSG transmission oil change was due this was back when the car had approx; 64,000 miles on the clock. I took the car to a different main dealer and asked them to run an ODB check over the vehicle with regard to the transmission. It came back with nothing.
They at least recommended a gearbox specialist. I went to them and they said it wasn't the gearbox
but that it was likely to be to do with the brake sensors.

I didn't want to spend anymore money on the car and over time the gear change has been getting worse but it is absolutely fine and no problems at all when put into manual mode.
I have managed to drive it like this for over two years and have got the vehicle through it's annual checks
and as I said it now has 109,000 on the clock.
Some times I put it back into auto mode and it will work fine for a period of time before the problem
re appears. Now the ABS and traction control lights come on from time to time in both auto and manual mode. When I turn the ignition off and re start the car the warning lights clear.
In summing after checking out what I can I believe it could be rectified by replacing the wheel timing rings and or the wheel sensors. I haven't been able to find any one who is willing to confirm this.
I am reluctant to spend the money to find out as I am looking to replace the car in the new year.

I hope this is of help to you and others 🙂

Thanks for the input. The shifting seems to have improved. I took the car to the dealer and they did a software recall update. After that, the EPC light would come on at random times. I took it back two days later thinking the update screwed something up. They ran an OBD II scan and said a low fuel pressure fault and a cylinder knock above threshold fault came up. Tech manually checked the low fuel pressure line and said the pump was putting out 2.8 psi when it should be between 4-6 psi. Needless to say three hours and $1200 later I drove away with a new in-tank fuel pump and control moduel.
Less than 30 hours later EPC light came on. Took it back to the dealer. Tech now says it's "bad gas" (too much ethanol) causing the knock fault. I think it's BS but he said just drive it out of the tank and fill up at another station.

Any other ideas?

@floridachris
no it doesn have to do anything with your emission. i would NOT RECCOMEND you do any update because it will force/reprogram how your stock parts run, this means, it will take time to self adjust. now, your hesitation is what the problem is, that is making your car shift hard. is this manual or automatic? if its manual , you need to check all your fuses, relays, then check your fluid level. change your transmission/engine filters, put exact quantity. in some cases, you have a part issue that has not yet showed any codes yet, so if you want to save money, use an electronic fluid spray cleaner and clean all your connections(plugs/wires). check your battery voltage, if you have old alternator that will give you strange random hesistation issues. let us know
