2018-2020 Hyundai Sonata or 2018-2020 Honda Accod
Looking to buy a new car and the newer Sonata's look great but I'm not sure how good they're made.
The newer Accords are a bit less of my style but maybe they're built better.
I know we can't predict how good these cars will hold up but I'm wondering if there's just an obvious choice I should go with or if I should just go with the one I like better (the Sonata).
Any replies are greatly appreciated.
Hyundai has had some pretty severe problems with its "Theta II" line of engines so you might want to look into that.
Get the Honda Accord and change your oil ever 5k miles/6 months.
The difference in quality isn't even close. And I've driven more Sonata's and other Hyundai's than I can count.
I do have a 2020 Accord Sport 2.0T with the 10-speed. I drive a lot for work, and I average 35MPG on regular unleaded. I do maintain my car religiously, so oil changes every 5k miles (@Toyotagrl is right to say 5k/6mo, I just always hit the mileage well before the time) with Mobil 1 full synthetic GF-6 oil. I added an oil catch can on the passenger side to help with carbon buildup and that's it. I touched nothing else because my warranty goes to 100k (got Honda's extended warranty) and I don't want to give them a reason to complain.
I'm 8 months/16k miles in and as @legendaryslayer said, it has "been treating me good like medicine." No dealer trips, no issues with rattles, etc. A lot of punch for a little 2.0L, especially in sport mode. I'm happy with it.
The Accords are definitely better built. If you are a type of person who keeps the car as long as possible, get the Accord, if you want to get rid of the car less than 100k miles and you do not mind low resale value, get the Hyundai.
My 2012 Sonata (Limited) blew the engine at 148,000 miles - in the middle of a 3 lane road at 11:30 pm. Came to an immediate dead stop and no lights or electric, luckily no traffic. BUTT, Hyundai replaced the engine at no cost to me (the drive train warranty was 150,000). Currently, the car has 186,000 miles and just lost the RF wheel bearing. Can’t get much for it now, but I won’t have another Hyundai.
FYI, you just resurrected a 6 month old post. Likely, it's no longer relevant. The author has not been back.
Definitely get the Honda Accord. If you can, go for the larger 2.0L turbo engine to mitigate oil dilution. Be sure to also change the oil every 5,000 miles (max) using the GF-6 oil. Also, see here for more tips to mitigate oil dilution on the Accord:

Get the Honda
Definitely get the Accord. The Sonata will turn into an endless moneypit.

By far the honda accord, if you watch scotty YouTube he says honda are reliable cars now it would all depend and your monetary situation as well but in my opinion I would go with the accord
Accord!
@brianframos My apologies, I missed the turbo part. I would be a bit worried about the turbo for sure. New design is always a gamble. Very hard to predict. It takes 5 years to prove, but being a Honda product, one can be hopeful!
The Sonata is cheaper, but quite honestly they’re pretty good cars.
I've worked on them, pretty simple to repair, so it’s up to you financially speaking.
@Mod_Man does have a 2020 Honda Accord. So far from him, it's been treating him well like medicine. I think you should get the Honda Accord because the Sonatas don't last long and they tend to have more problems than the Sonata. Unless you wanted to invite your friends, you can have smores. Most of the guys like @daywalker, Mod_Man, @mountainmanjoe, and @inthrustwetrust are basically veterans here in cars lol.

Thanks for the mention! 🙂
@Mod_Man Your welcome. 🙂 I don't know why I said the Sonata tends to have problems than the Sonata lmao.
My dad has a 2015 accord and only spent under a 1000 bucks in repairs in 6 years. Get the accord most definetly, but with the 2.0 turbos if you can.
Accord hands down. The Sonatas are junk and poor quality, just like almost every other Korean car.
