Hello

I’m debating buying a new Land Cruiser. Have always bought used Toyota and Lexus’, and I have the money to pay cash, and i like to make my cars last couple of decades, so willing to buy a new one for once, so please no judgement on that. LC retain value and I do a lot of of off roading. Dilemma is, the last land cruiser in USA is 2021 (200 series) which is going to be the last V8 LC (for now at least) while the rest of the world is getting 2022 make over and is now the 300 series, with a twin turbo V6 among other changes such as 10 speed transmission, much quicker acceleration from 0-60 (6 some seconds) compared to 9 seconds for the older 2021 200 series. Also 2022 comes in couple of different models, one will be an even more off roading version. My question is, Scotty doesn’t like turbo engines, should I just stick to getting the 2021 v8 older looking land cruiser (with not as nice inside but good enough for me as I care about engine and off-roading capability) or go for the 2022 twin turbo v6 and hope Toyota’s turbo lasts longer than other turbos? They won’t make v8 in the 300s. New one also has much better inside, much like the LX with wide screen screen and better camera quality for when off roading etc. suspension pretty much the same with kdss, and obviously a new makeover on the outside too and much quicker acceleration wise. But will the twin turbo v6 be more reliable than the v8? I care more about whether it’s worth it to get the good old reliable v8 which is the last year (for now) it will ever be made.

Thank you

Get the V8. No way a Twin Turbo V6 will be as reliable as a V8. Too much additional stress on the smaller motor, more complex, more electronics to go wrong. Easy choice to go with the V8.

Thanks so much! That was my gut feeling also to purchase the 2021 v8. It probably will also retain value more as it’s the last one in North America and the world with v8, not that I’d be selling it, hoping to keep for 20+ years. Thank you.

I would get the V8. In my opinion, if you pay that much money for a car, you really don't care about the gas mileage which is the main selling point of new Land Cruisers. Also, the proven long term reliability of the V8 is way more than the turbo V6.

Thanks so much! That was my gut feeling also to purchase the 2021 v8. And for gas mileage, ya I don’t mind, as me keeping the car for many more years due to its reliability saves me money. As for fuel tank size which is an issue too and can get trouble some in remote areas, I’ll get the auxiliary fuel tank added to the back rear, which can give me 75%-150% more fuel depending on which tank I select. So at least won’t have to fill up as frequently. Thank you so much for the reply!

From a longevity point of view, go with the true and tried Land Cruiser J200 generation, so 2021 Land Cruiser.  It’s been around since 2007 and with 2021 being the last generation, it’s been dialed in.  A naturally aspirated V8, in this context, should outlast the twin turbo V6 from the new generation (J300).  The vehicle overall should last you decades as long as you stay on top of all the maintenance.  The new J300 (starting with 2022 model year) could have issues in the first few years until Toyota works out the kinks (and I don’t just mean the powertrain but everything else around it) - not worth it, go with the time tested, proven powertrain (and everything else) from the last generation.

Thanks a lot. I’ll be going with the last 2021 200 series LC. I agree with your great points. Proven reliability! Rather have that then all the new technology at the dash or the quick acceleration won’t matter much if the engine and other important expensive components aren’t as good as the proven v8 LC. And yes planning on keeping it for a couple of decades and I always stay on top of maintenance. Thanks a lot!
