6L80 Transmission | Chevy Silverado Issues

As is well known, the 6L80 transmission blows, or can blow pretty easily. In my 2014 1500LT, I experienced all of the symptoms of a bad torque converter, as we all know with the GM unbased TC's, they usually go before 80K. Mine luckily lasted 100K over that, but it seems it has gone bad.

The question here is, is it worth purchasing a billet based torque converter for the replacement, and if it comes down to a total failure of the trans and requires a rebuild, is it more cost effective to purchase a new or used transmission and have it installed with a billet base torque converter vs. having it rebuilt totally?

I've experiences random "grinding" upon ecceleration, dancing rpm needle on cruise, loss in power uphill, stuck in 4th gear randomy, a hard "buck" or jolt when downshifting to 1st gear at exactly at 15mph, recently experienced total power loss in 4th gear. Shutting it down and restarting seems to get it back into gear, however getting stuck again in 4th with a total loss of engine power, not battery power, just no acceleration. Recently it's gone into reverse and drive just fine, but was intermitent and the vehicle would not catch into gear, when it does there a significant buck when catching.

I am assuming these are symptoms of the torque converter, am I correct in that assessment? Or is it to be assumed there is internal damage to the gears?

Thanks

It sounds like your transmission has 180k miles?

If so then I would replace it with a remanufactured one.

Yes, 183K, that seems to be the nuclear fix to the issue... I guess just having a transmission place look it over for an inspection would be the smartest thing to do, I can surely hear the torque converter when firing it up.

Just don't want to commit to a $3000 and $1000 labor bill to install a reman when the internal components may be okay. If it's just a TC change, that'd save me a few grand., thank you for responding.

the internal parts are not okay after 180k .that's the point. Either way you're dropping the transmission which is a ton of labour. Why do it again a few months down the road when the next part fails. Do it once. Do it right.

Thanks Joe, I appreciate it.

Or if you're fortunate enough, maybe go to any junkyard around your radius and you could try finding a well taken care of tranny in a totaled 1500 Silverado and/or Sierra and at that point, you could save a good chunk of money getting it replaced if you do find one.

FYI, I've moved your answer for you.

Thanks for the reminder brother!😆👍
