Hey Scotty,
I recently purchased a 2017 Lexus IS 200t with 36,000 miles. Since the 8AR is Toyota's first modern production turbo engine (aside from the V35 in the LS 500), I was wondering if I should expect similar reliability to the 2GR I had in my 07 ES 350. Any issues you have seen that I should look out for? Thank you.
Since Toyota has been slower than other automakers to roll out turbo engines into their line up, hopefully that means they took more time to test and work out the “kinks”. Time will tell. BTW, that engine was developed over a period of 9 years at their Kyushu plant.
9 years sounds promising! Let's hope all that work paid off. The only other turbo car I've ever owned was an MK5 Golf GTI and, as we all know, those engines were pieces of junk!
They are too new. Any Toyota engine could go 5 years, which is how long the engine has been out. But after that, only time will tell.
You have some sophisticated engine in your chariot! Lots of electronics. If you so inclined, scary details here:

As how reliable it is, … only time will tell. So far, not much feedback.

Thanks for the link! I love learning about engines and could not find an article this in-depth. Hopefully it arms me to deal with any potential future issues.
