[Solved] 98 Silverado 5.7l crank no start

I have a 1998 Chevy Silverado, 2 wheel drive with 128K, a 5.7l, A/C, single cab short bed. It started being more sluggish when starting it after sitting for a few hours and I hoped initially it was just the cold weather. Then one morning it would crank but not start. I watched your video on what to do with crank no start. It was a great help. I worked my way through to using starter fluid in the intake. The truck started right up with this, but instead of just running for a few seconds due to the starter fluid and then dying, it ran no problem for several minutes. I turned it off and it started back up again without using the starter fluid & it has started up several times since, even the following day without any delay and runs like it did before any of this. Do you think the problem is the fuel pump going bad? Can it work intermittently before going out completely? Should I just replace the fuel pump to ensure no one gets stranded somewhere or look into something else being the problem?

I have never owned a vehicle with an automatic transmission because I never wanted one.  Can't help you with this question.  Sorry.  You might want to check if your idle speed is too high, should be about 750 rpm.

Check fuel pressure first, then fuel filter.  Spraying starter fluid can sometimes dislodge crud built up on the throttle plate, or jets in case of a carb.

Thanks,
I changed the fuel filter and it seems to be running, idling and starting much better. Odd thing now is it shifts really hard. Going from Neutral to drive or Neutral to reverse it shifts really hard and learches forward. Is this something to be concerned about? It’s worse from Neutral to Drive but is also hard from 1st to 2nd & into 3rd.
I also changed the serpentine belt while when the truck originally started running rough and I noticed it was cracked.
Thanks
