99 ford explorer P1504 idle air control circulation

This 99 Explorer Sport  OHC 6 inherited has 147,384 miles and sat for the last 6 years until I got it. I drained all the gas and oil. Installed a new fuel filter and oil and filter. Flushed out the remaining gas up front. New air filter too. Charged battery and it started and ran very rough and would only run at 2000 plus rpm. No codes or check engine light.

Now after running it for about an hour it will start and idle at 900 rpm..no blue, black or white smoke BUT stalls when put in drive...???

Did physical and electrical tests performed on the Mass air flow, Throttle position and cleaned the Inlet Air solenoid and pcv valves. ALL OK...Did tests of EGR diaphram and electrical tests of EGR solenoid  DPFE Sensor.

Bought a SCAN tool and gave me one code and says Initial Tank Vacuum Reading reached Limit and Vapor Generation Max pressure reached.

Finally I received a P1504 Idle Air Ctrl Circ code.  I made a Vacuum Smoke tester (puts out 1 psi) using mineral oil.   Smoke comes from the EGR valve and one of the hoses that vents the valve cover to the intake snorkel.  Did not see smoke leaking from any other places... I also tested using a propane tank with hose and moved it around the vacuum and intake connections..Did not notice any change in rpm..

Should I try to remove and clean the EGR valve (or just replace with a new EGR) and put a new hose??? then see where we are??

Scotty any help PLEASEE!!!!

THE OLD STUDEKID...WHEN CARS WERE SIMPLE!

If you search P1504 on the web, it means "Intake Air Control circuit malfunction"

(nothing to do with circulation)

First make sure your charging system is in good shape ... test battery + alternator. Connections clean + tight.

Then inspect the IAC valve. Make sure the wiring harness isn't damaged. Check connector for corrosion etc. inspect grounding point. Make sure it isn't plugged up with carbon too.

An electrical schematic is going to help you big time. Hope you have a Haynes manual.

New EGR valve and hose.

Thank you..now it will be fun removing the old one especially the part that has one big nasty collar nut ..rusted to the exhaust tube!!

Got any PB Blaster you could use before loosening it?  If not, you could try heating it up with a torch to see if it breaks loose.

The IAC valve was cleaned and gasket good. I performed a test where you disconnect the IAC connector and the engine should stall out. It did. I will check out the alternator and the battery is 7 years old..

But what about the leak of test smoke coming out from the EGR valve...is that a concern too???

Thanks 🙂

Yes it shouldn't do that. There shouldn't be any smoke leaking out into the atmosphere.
