Greetings from Singapore!
I am planning to get the 2018 Skoda Octavia RS245. It has a 2L turbocharged petrol engine mated to a 7-speed wet clutch DSG transmission.
Could anyone share their experiences on the pros & cons on this ride?
Many thanks in advance!
Aren't cars in Singapore super expensive? Anyway, I'll assume you can afford this car, so here are my few cents.
It's a nice zippy liftback sedan (or estate, not sure which you are getting) using the VW EA888 engine and excellent DSG dual clutch.
Thing is, those 888s tend to get carbon buildup being a TSI engine and the DSG are not transmissions to be neglected. Also, there are lots of plastics and electronics involved that can break in Singapore's hot weather.
My opinion is that unless you are prepared to take good care of it, you might be better off with something else.
You are right! Cars are pretty expensive here compared to anywhere in the world. It is hot and humid here. Now you set me thinking...
+1 @venator77
Scotty made a video about this engine. Sure, it’s a fast car and looks good, but unless you want to use it as a weekend toy, stay away from it (especially in the Singapore heat & humidity) -
I just want to add, while it is not the pinnacle of reliability like Toyotas and Hondas are, it is certainly better than an Audi or other luxury German brands. Skodas are budget VWs, so parts might be cheaper compared to what Audi and even VW uses.
Not in Asia, unfortunately.. The Octavia has plenty of VAG parts.
VWs are quite common here but not Skoda. I do hope that the parts are pretty to get.
Why don’t you ask the local dealer for a repair estimate on the common failure prone parts of that car? Also factor in, the car is a CBU from Europe and you’ll have to wait for parts to be shipped into Singapore. To add to it, it’s a relatively rare RS245. Now, if it was a diesel Octavia, I’d say go right ahead because they can’t last a LONG time, but the EA888 is a big gamble, plus that DSG..
