Hey Scotty, I recently got my first job and decided it's time for me to start saving up to buy my own used car. Working minimum wage in California I have a fairly low budget and I want a reliable car. I'm looking for an SUV and am wondering if anyone knows which are the most reliable models or if I should choose a different type. I saw your TikTok about the Celica, is that a good car for me?
If you are getting a FIRST car, you should be sure to check what insurance will cost you (so you know how much to budget for that vs the actual car). This is especially important, as some otherwise desirable cars - say a Mustang, can have much higher insurance rates than a sedan.
Unfortunately, also, in all states other than California, your credit rating is a very important factor, so presuming you are young, you could end up having to spend quite a bit for basic insurance.
If you are looking for an SUV, not sure why you would consider the Celica.
I would recommend a Honda Covic or Toyota Corolla as a first car. Easier to maneuver, cheaper on gas and insurance, cheaper to repair, better visibility.....a lot of pro's.
Toyota RAV4 or Honda CRV would be my recommendations for a mid size SUV.
If you do not have that much money, do not buy a cheap SUV because you end up spending way more money than you paid for. I would not recommend low budget SUV at all. Instead, get a Corolla (Stay away from 1998-2002 model years).
What is the most reliable year for the corolla that would require the least amount of work?
2003-2008 Automatic transmission is a good bet.
Instead of SUV, go with a used Toyota Corolla as a first car. It will be the easiest on the wallet.
See here for years to avoid:
If you are wanting an SUV a Celica is not for you. A Toyota 4runner from the early 2000s can be had for under 5k all day long! That would be what I would get.
I'd get a Toyota Corolla
I'd pass on the Celica because a good reliable generations are well over 2 decades old and would be too big a hassle especially for a first car. Scotty has one and he puts like 700 miles a year on it. Daily driving it wouldn't be that smart. Its based on the Corolla and the Corolla is what I would get, recommending 2003-2008 Automatic as most reliable and could find them $2-4k
