Hi,
My name is Evan and I am in the market to buy my first car. I have 2500 for a budget. I found 2011 kia with 180k miles on marketplace. I dont know a lot buying used cars. Should I buy it? What should I check for?
There’s a reason why it’s so cheap, Kias start to have issues around that millage.
I would definitely save up and get a Kia or a Hyundai with slightly less millage if you’re looking for a cheap simple reliable car.
Hyundais/Kias are generally not built well and with that high mileage (180,000 miles) it is on burrowed time. I would pass on that.
That is too high miles I would skip now 2500 is not a lot for a car so if it is in good shape it could be OK but then again like Daywalker said it is on borrowed time. You are better off with an older Toyota.
Kia does not make good cars, I would pass.
Run away from that Kia!
With $2500, I’d start looking at old manual Corollas/Civics & pick up the one that’s in the best shape, mechanically.
As with any used car, have it inspected thoroughly by a reputed mechanic, before you buy it. You don’t want to buy another man’s problem.
Look for ones which have their paint faded off or look mad cosmetically as that can allow you negotiate harder on the price.
Good luck & congratulations on your first car!
Hi Evan. Welcome to the forum. First car ... exciting!
I would advice against getting a Kia. It might actually be one of my last choices.
On your budget, I would probably look for cars which... let's say the outside condition has "character". Find the youngest car with lowest mileage you can. Craigslist will be your friend. I don't think you'll have much luck at the lots. Try to scrape together as much cash as you can because you're right on the cusp. And extra $1k or 2 will make a big difference with the kind of car you're going to find.
Don't forget to read our car buying page. It's in the FAQ at the top. Gobs of useful information there that will benefit you. Good luck!
I would also add least another $900 for the cost of the insurance
You don't have to pay $900 up front. Insurance can be amortized
Pass on that one and look for something other than Hyundai/Kia.
