Should I buy this used fleet pickup

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to possible purchase a 2011 F250 XL Supercab with a utility bed. The truck has a 6.2l gas enngine with the 6 speed tranny, and currently has 225,000 miles on it. It's a single owner, fleet vehicle that never plowed or towed, about half the miles are highway, the company runs many of the same truck and they are based here in the Massachusets area. The only problem it has, is the FR wheel bearing is making some noise other than that it does not have any problems. I have not gone to look at it yet, I do plan on bring a buddy of mine thats a mechanic. The seller is asking 5,000 but it is negotiable. I plan on using it as a winter truck, my daily  93 F150 that I did a massive frame off restoration since its only 2wd and its in mint condition I don't want to drive it. I usually do about 5-8,000 miles a year. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

George

The main determining factor, other than the price, when I buy used vehicles, is to do a compression and leak down test to ascertain the condition of the engine.  If it doesn't pass either one of these tests, I move on to something else.

Thanks, I'll be sure that my mechanic does that. Thanks

it has not had any trasmission oil changes/flushes

I'd be leery.

Btw, Scotty usually does not answer comments or any further question in a topic, made after his reply.

Yeah, I'd be leery too. Very leery.

fleet vehicle that never plowed or towed

I have a corporate fleet vehicle in my household and like most people would we treat it like crap.

On mine the tranny URGENTLY needs an oil change (it has the very internment shift shock and slips sometimes) the check engines light current is on (exhaust pressure differential sensor) - but eh, the tranny will get replaced when it goes out or when it'll get worse and the check engine light will be treated when it's time to change the oil.

Also engine oil obviously gets replaced at best by what the manual suggests but the powertrain gets absolutely torn apart, because no one drivers a fleet car like their own, because who cares? the employer pays insurance and fixes it, so having fun with a car that you don't have to care for is just another benefit.

Don't buy corporate fleet cars, especially not trucks.

No one on earth treats their corporate fleet car nicely.

The only problem it has

well that's the only problem you see, often these have more especially being a ford with 225k miles...

it has not had any trasmission oil changes/flushes

That's not good at all.

the maintence guy beleives that more particulates end up going into the transmission then where already there

...what a joke. Has he ever seen how dirty the ATF gets on conventional automatics?...

Fleet vehicles are not treated well. Almost as bad as rentals. The transmission will be beat on, the doors ...  everything.

Well, wheel bearings don't cost that much. But the main thing you'd be worrying about where you live. Is it rotted away? Is it all rusted? If it's rusted don't buy it. But if the frame still solid it could be a decent knock around truck

Hi Scotty,

Thanks for responding, I live in Mass the truck is local, and the frame is solid aside from some surface rust. Oil changes where also done every 5,000 miles, but it has not had any trasmission oil changes/flushes because the maintence guy beleives that more particulates end up going into the transmission then where already there. I've never heard that, any thoughts?
