Hey, so my friend is looking to buy a used car under 4k euros in Germany. I told him to buy an old toyota, lexus or a honda, even if it's older and high mileage (just check the car by a mechanic before buying). But he is so shocked when I say that a lexus with 250k km on it is better than a BMW or a VW with 100k, he doesn't believe me. Am I wrong? Yes those cars are made in Germany and based there but that doesn't make their repairs non-existent and cheap, right? Please share your opinion.
Hello!
Unfortunately, here in Europe it's a different story. Toyota's engines last 200k to 300k km. I see german TDI diesels cars being sold with much more km on odo. But according to what I hear, I wouldn't touch a BMW or Fiat even here.
Perhaps @dan and @inthrustwetrust know more.
Good luck!
I agree with everything.
Modern fiat is very bad, Nowadays pretty much all gearbox shops are filled with the Fiat Tipo because of how unreliable the FPT635 seems to be.
I don’t remember it having the FTP dual clutch having that much issues when they had it in the MiTO, this must be due to cost cutting measures impacting quality…
Europe is (or was) all about Diesel engines, and I’ve regularly seen diesel VWs with in excess of 300,000kms. So @g-t is right when he says things are different in Europe, when it comes to German vehicles.
The thing about Europe is, aftermarket parts for German brands are aplenty & plenty of mechanics know how to work on them, which keeps labour costs down.
Just yesterday there was a question from a European member who had a tough time getting his Subaru fixed.
The thing about German vehicles though is, they’re still over engineered. So plastic & electronic things keep breaking constantly & they cost money to fix.
Also, the Japanese OEMs seem to sell their vehicles with different engines in Europe, compared to other markets (maybe it’s an emission thing).
Was your friend considering a diesel BMW or VW?
He didn't really care whether it's diesel or gasoline, but now I'll let him know. Thanks!
If I lived in Germany, I'd be driving a BMW. No question about it.
you can't convince some people. He wants to learn the hard way.
