Buying used transmission advice

Greetings,

I may or may not need a transmission but I found one with less than 100k for $350.  Figured it was cheap enough to gamble.  Seller has verified it is a 2009 Toyota Tacoma 2nd generation A750E transmission and torque converter with yoke.  Seller did an upgrade to a 4x4 a few years ago.

The transmission is 10 hours away and the seller has volunteered to mule it down to me for gas money, total would be $500. He plans on going to the Texas coast for vacation.

So I’m buying this site unseen. He has confirmed that is a 2nd gen. and model of transmission.

What other questions would be relevant before he hauls it down here?  Should I be concerned that has been sitting for some time?

My truck:

2005 Tacoma PreRunner Double Cab 2WD V-6
4.0-L V-6 DOHC 24V
Engine 1GRF
Transmission A750E (5 Speed Automatic)

Appreciate any advice that can be given, thanks for your time.

Regards,

Kevin S.

If you're buying a used transmission you're taking a gamble. I don't believe what anybody says. I seen junk yards I also they had less than 100 case some of that 300K it's just the playing Gamble if you're a gamble man go ahead but it's not something I would do it's a lot of work that may not pay off

Thanks Scotty!

A used transmission is always a gamble. There's really no way to check out its functionality when it's not in a vehicle. The seller could easily clean up any indication of leaks an clean out any metal shavings in the pan.

On the other hand you certainly won't be able to buy a properly rebuilt one for $500. I've done well with used transmissions over the years but it comes down to the luck of the draw - are you feeling lucky?

Thanks Chuck

Might not be too bad if you plan to do the work yourself, you're only gambling $500 and some sweat equity. If you have to pay someone to install it and the trans is bad now it's a bigger, more expensive problem.
