Car jerks in reverse

Hey Scotty,

I have an automatic 2002 Ford Mustang V6 with 115,000 miles on it. Over the past few weeks I’ve noticed it jerks a little when I put the car in reverse. Today it started jerking very hard.

I don’t notice any issues putting it in drive or going down the road. The only codes I have are for an EGR valve (which I actually changed recently).

I’ve watched all your transmission issues and believe that’s the cause. I’ve had the car since about 100,000 miles and suspect the transmission fluid has never been changed. When I check, it is at the right level and very dirty.

I’m considering getting a new vehicle, should this make my decision or could it be a smaller issue?

What should I do to prevent further harm before trading the car in? Change the fluid or no?

!00,000 mile transmission service?  What a joke.  This is why transmission shops are making a fortune.  I would never go past 50,000 miles without a fluid and filter change.  That's because I don't want to shell out $3000 for new one.

I agree, if I had the car sooner I would have done it. Now I’m just trying to decide if it’s a bigger gamble to change it or leave it alone.

With that mileage, if the ATF has not been changed, it is likely that the tranny would get worse if you change the fluid. Try some Lucas transmission additive and pray it works.

I’ll give it a go. Wish me luck!

Cleaning the pan, changing the filter and putting the old fluid back in probably won't make things worse but it won't do anything to help the jerking IMO.

Change the fluid and filter and hope for the best.  It may be too late at 115,000 miles without a fluid and filter change per the maintenance schedule.  What does the maintenance section of your owner's manual say for this now 20 year old car?

I don’t have the manual. Best I can tell online is Ford recommends at 100,000 miles.
I’m just concerned I change the fluid at this point and push the transmission over the edge.

The maintenance schedule for your car is for automatic transmission fluid and filter change every 30k miles or 48 months. Chang the fluid and filter and hope for the best like Doc says. Scotty advises keeping the old fluid in case there's a problem so you can put it back in. He has several videos addressing overdue transmission fluid changes. Good luck.

Yeah, some of them say a hard no at this point. Some say, if it’s bad give it a whirl and see what happens. I wouldn’t say my issue is bad, but definitely notable.

Either way I’m giving it a go tomorrow, I’ll let you guys know how it turns out!

I have a 2002 automatic mustang v6 with 115,000 miles on it. I don’t believe the transmission fluid has ever been changed and recently it started jerking when I put it in reverse.

After debating in the forums I decided to change the filter and add new fluid/Lucas oil stop slip. Based off of previous videos this seemed like the best course of action.

Well I just watched a video titled “The Truth About My Worsening Condition” where a user asks if they should change the fluid in an old grand am.

The advice given was to leave it alone unless there were issues. If there were issues change the filter, clean the pan, and put the OLD fluid back in.

My question is what do I do?

Im now thinking try the old fluid method and if the problem persists move to the new fluid/Lucas oil.

Any input would be appreciated.

It’s a different question with new information

I can read. Please just update the original post with the new information. Thank you.

Apparently, you weren't confused enough to give a down vote for my advice, which was to change the fluid and filter.

What are you talking about?

he's talking about the answer he gave you (see above) when you asked the same question yesterday.

Yes, I saw the answer and I responded. Not sure what part of my response was taken negatively but I’m here for (hopefully) reputable advice, not drama.

Then stop creating it.

I still have no clue what you are talking about bud. Chill

he said change the fluid. Which part of that didn't you understand?
