Cracked Valve Cover or Production Error?

Hey everyone!

I have a 2015 Lexus RX350, 3.5L (2GR-FE), 172,000 miles. I do oil changes every 3,000 miles since it hit 150,000, before that was doing them every 5,000 miles.

Just noticed what could be a crack on the top of the valve cover, just above the timing chain. Haven’t pulled the cover off to verify that it actually even is a crack.

It doesn’t leak oil from this location, but I wanted to come check here before I decided to pull it off just in case it could be a manufacturing imperfection. I’m moving from CA to OK in the next few weeks, and wanted to make sure this car is ready, since I’ll also be pulling a small 5x8 utility trailer behind it. I’ve done this drive before (my spouse and I are dual-military and I’m getting out of the service), so I know what to expect.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. If I need to pull the cover to verify then come back I absolutely will. Thanks!

Going by the photo it appears to be mainly a cosmetic flaw. If the car runs fine and there's no oil leaking or reduction in crankcase ventilation, drive it until you decide to install a new cover.

it's hard to tell from the photo, but it may just be a blemish from the casting process. Spray some soapy water on it and see if it bubbles.

Either way, valve covers don't really need to hold pressure, and are mostly dry, so I wouldn't worry too much.
