Scotty,
While preparing for the inevitable day when I do replace my 1999 RAV4, I've thankfully been warned about extensive carbon buildup problems on valves of GDI equipped engines. As one who has been around diesel engines, I'm curious if you know why I don't hear about this extent of carbon problems in diesel engines - which have used direct fuel injection for easily half a century or more?

Good question. Do Diesel engines have a PCV system?
And by the way, the new Rav4 engines use dual injection. There is another injector in the intake so it doesn't suffer the same GDI problems.
Good question, however, for Diesel engines it’s more about the amount of time they idle their engines, but it’s just as much an issue on those vehicles as well.
You don’t hear about it because it’s really not an issue if you use a quality fuel treatment every once in awhile.
Which the majority of diesel owners use.
