Drilling in boxed frame chassis

Hi! I just want to ask regarding drilling an existing small hole to a bigger hole in a box frame. The location of the hole is at the bottom of the frame to attach a tow hitch receiver. Will it affect the rigidity of my frame or it will crack overtime?

even its a ladder frame and the hole is around 1.5cm will it still weaken the frame?

Yes, you're reducing the amount of metal in the frame when you drill it out, there's no way around it. Mechanical engineers designed your ladder frame based on the vehicle's anticipated loads. Leave it the way it is. The hollow spots are where reinforcement is not needed which means there can be less metal at that point and it will not affect the durability of the steel. It's similar to the wings of an airplane. If you drill it out and put a load on it, that is now an unanticipated load, and and the frame might fail. It's up to some unknown safety margin to keep you safe. I wouldn't be riding on an unknown safety factor.

If it's a truck, it was designed with a certain load in mind, whether or not you actually have a tow hitch that came with the vehicle. Use the tow hitch that was designed for your vehicle, no more.

Well you're weakening the frame. There's no arguing that. You would have to do it correctly and use the right size bolt and I would say put a spacer in between it so it doesn't crush the frame when you tighten it up
