Hello Scotty, question about engine temperature. Is there such thing as engine temperature being too low. Will lower engine temperature damage any internal engine parts.

The thermostat regulates engine temperature. The engine runs best at a particular temperature range. If it doesn't reach operating temperature (call "open loop"), then it won't combust properly, it will burn too much fuel, it won't have full power, it won't have correct lubrication, and it will wear out faster.

Without a thermostat, the radiator would be constantly cooling the engine, and it would be too cold. Imagine if your blood vessels were always dilated, and your body was sweating all time. You would be pretty uncomfortable in the winter. You body has very tight temperature regulation (within 1 degree of 98F!) because otherwise it doesn't work the way it was built, just like your car.

The purpose of a thermostat is to isolate the engine from the radiator until it reaches a certain temperature.

If you have no thermostat, the engine will take longer to warm up and moisture will form. The oil will then become slushy which will block out lubrication and will damage your engine.

Yes, low engine temperature causes problems. It can cause premature piston wear, amongst other issues.

If you are experiencing low engine temperature, check to make sure your thermostat is working correctly.

You do NOT want your engine to run at a lower temperature than its normal, optimal operating range!  When you turn on your vehicle it will gradually make it to normal operating temperature.  If it doesn’t you have an issue (thermostat for instance).  Anyhow, the materials and the tolerances within the engine are all designed to run within a specific temperature range. If the block is colder than it should be, those tolerances are affected, which can impact fuel economy and also impact longevity.  Also, another reason to not drive the car hard when it hasn’t reached operating temperature.

Hello

Why is it bad to run a car without a thermostat?
