Topic starter
Out of all the transmissions, Manual, Automatic, and CVT, it seems CVT is the most frowned upon in terms performance and reliability.
With that said, what are the failure points of CVT’s? What is it about CVT’s that make them prone to failure more rapidly than automatics or manuals?
It seems to me that CVT’s are simpler in design than planetary gear automatics and even manual trannies, so in theory, one would think they could outlast other transmissions.

#1 it's a young, unproven technology.
#2 there's a lot of friction going. And those chains they use are incredibly complex and delicate things
You just cant beat the simplicity of gears. Teeth meshing into teeth.
