Help with a P0501 code on a Kia Sorento.

I'm helping a friend out with a 2008 Kia Sorento 4WD, 3.8 V6, 5 speed auto, it has a few issues. It has a P0501 vehicle speed sensor range/ performance code. I believe it is the senor on the transmission not the one behind the dash. The speedometer is showing the right speed, but the mil light, abs light, and esc light are on. Just can't find the location of the sensor on the transmission. I'm hoping it not in the transmission.

The other issues is it has a rough idle while in drive and reverse. Idle is fine in park and neutral. Autozone told him it was injectors, but I don't believe it is.

Any help with this is much appreciated.

P0501 is a wheel speed sensor no?... Fix that and the esc and abs lights should also go away. Either it be sensor or rubbing wiring causing a short.

As for the rough idle only in drive and reverse but not park or neutral, have you taken a look at the IACV? Clean that out if not done already, and then if not that then check out the TPS sensor and related items.

After looking into this seems like other kia's have similar issues. Pray it not be any of the chinesium computer modules, ECU, ABS, or/and ESC.

Chinesium? Is that the opposite of unobtanium?

@Glen_stet Lol! May as well be.

I was thinking the wheel speed sensor. But depending on what you read it could be either or. I'll try to clean the iavc. Yeah Kia is a junk brand. Thnaks

Thanks for the reply. I have read those sites before. I did have freeze frame data for that code. Here is the thing, with that code, one site points to the WSS in the wheel hub f/r or r/r, the others point to the VSS in the transmission, transfer case, or rear differential. So that leads me to the confusion of which one is it going to be. After looking at parts diagrams, this Kia the VSS is either inside or bolted to the outside of the transmission, one on the transfer case, one behind the gauge cluster. 3 different parts. Now if it is the WSS, then there is one on each wheel. That is the conundrum. Lol

So I replaced the speed sensor in the right wheel. No change in the code or light. And yes I erased the codes and it came back. Any other ideas?

Kerem, I had sent links already. See his post on the issue (regarding the sensors):

@daywalker
I saw that, just wanted to add another I thought was helpful. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

Edit: Alright, too complicated for me I'll leave it up to the OGs to figure it out lol
