I'm from Europe, and i'm looking at 20 year old cars because they are very cheap to get, and i've found some BMWs 318i from 2000-2001 that seem pretty ok at first glance, price is between one and two grand. I wanted to get it with a 1.9 litre petrol engine because people say it would require less costly repairs over a small period of time, and i'm looking to get a car for traveling in weekends, not daily commutes.
I'm thinking about the BMW Touring 318i instead of the sedan, due to more space, i thought it would only be slightly heavier, not that big of a difference in mileage with the same engine.
Most of the available cars' mileage is between 125000 miles and 180000.
What would you recommend? Should i look for something else? Thanks in advance and hope to hear from you soon! Love your videos!
Hi!
I'm from Belgium and bought a 318ci 2002 for 2000 euro's last year as my first car as well!
It had 271 000 km's(169 000) miles and was amazing to drive the first 2 weeks.
But then it blew a head gasket and cracked the head 🤣 🤣 .
We then bought a used engine for 600 euro's(plus 800 euro installation) and since then it ran fine despite some minor things.
But looking back at it I would have bought something cheaper to maintain and more reliable.
Almost everyone in my family have got vw(audi, skoda) tdi's and they seem to last a long time here in Europe.
This! Is why…
I hoped i'd have luck in finding a car that looked different to all the Basic cars in europe but i guess i'll have to get one like everyone else, for reliability and cheaper repairs 😂 thanks for the insight anyways! After all I'll go with the reliability over the looks
When in Rome…
A 20yr old BMW, even in Europe? Hmm..
As a first car, I think you’d be better off with an old VW or Skoda diesel, to be honest.
What are all your options apart from that BMW?
Do not do that. Although BMWs are better built in Europe but you are talking about a 20 years old BMW with lots of cheap plastic that can break in any moment you end up buying those cheap plastic for a good money.
