Hello. I’m gonna start this by saying I know absolutely nothing about cars. I own a 2012 Nissan Altima 2.5 S with 154,000 miles. Engine is a 2.5 L 4 cylinder and it has a cvt transmission. I’ve had it for 2 years now and never really had a problem with it until now. I don’t know of any maintenance it has had before I bought it. About 2 months ago, my car broke down and I took it to a mechanic I really trust. He replaced some spark plugs and an ignition coil but he also told me my transmission was going out. I couldn’t understand what he was saying because, quite frankly, I didn’t know what he was talking about. But I know he said something about solenoids. He also said Nissan’s cvt transmissions usually give out around 100,000 to 150,000 miles. And the mechanic said I should go ahead and trade it in while it’s still running because cvt transmissions cost the same if not more to fix than to replace. Which would be $6,000. That’s more than I paid to buy the car. Since I’ve had the car, I noticed that every now and then when I would stop at a red light and I was idling, the car would shudder/vibrate. And when I looked it up I kept seeing stuff for transmission. But I figured that it would be a later problem so I didn’t do anything about it. After I got my car back from the mechanic, I noticed it would jerk sometimes and it never did that before. I kept driving it for about a month and then it was having a hard time accelerating up hills. Now, there’s some resistance in accelerating in general. It’s not slipping gears or anything, but it’s obviously being a little funky. I tried to trade it in at a dealership, try to get loans, and all that good stuff but ultimately couldn’t go through with that because of money and credit. So I asked around to some friends that really know cars. One of them has worked on cars since he was a kid. He has driven it and checked out the transmission and he says it’s fine. I just need to change my transmission fluid or get a trans flush. I replaced my transmission fluid about a year ago, so I don’t know if that’ll help. I’ve asked multiple people that know cars better than I do and they’ve all said my transmission should be fine but I can’t help but think my transmission is failing. I’m in a tough spot financially, so I’m really hoping it just needs maintenance. But, if the transmission is failing I would like to know before it just completely gives out on me. Also, I don’t know if this is necessary, but I hit a deer 3 weeks ago and my radiator cracked a little. It hasn’t been leaking fluid or anything, but I know that could be a problem at least in the future. I also haven’t gotten an oil change since all of this has happened ( about 3-4 months), but I don’t know if that has any relevance. Honestly, My car is a beater at this point and I plan on getting rid of it eventually, but right now is not the best time. Thank you for your help!
The CVTs on those cars are terrible and known to fail frequently, especially if the fluid is not changed regularly. Scotty has talked about how awful they are many times. Chances are the transmission is failing. In fact it's more surprising that it lasted as long as it has. Of course you could try changing the fluid to see if it helps but that's a real crap shoot.
Note the top problem (by a very large margin) with those cars:

Don't buy another CVT-equipped Nissan.
