I have a 1998 Honda Accord ExV6 Automatic. Had it since 2005. 128,000 miles, 2 owners (1 previously) and it's been running well until recently. Out of nowhere, I had this grinding/scraping/whirling noise whenever I would accelerate. Took it into 1 shop, they couldn't find anything, took it to another shop, they said it was a cat converter issue and tried to replicate the noise but it wasn't the same. However, the noise was gone. For about 4 days. It came back for 1-2 days and is now gone again, and has been gone for about a week. I'm trying to figure out whether this is a serious issue. On top of that issue, the car also has some harsh shifting problems, it bucks whenever it changes gears. To me, it seems like a transmission issue. No check engine lights and the shop said no codes were found. Any advice? Is it time to move on?
I would try and change the transmission fluid. Save the old fluid incase the transmission starts to slip. I am wondering if you have a wheel bearing going out. Find a good mechanic to diagnose the vehicle for you.
I'll bet it's the trans. How many times has the fluid and filter been changed in 128,000 miles? Should have been changed about 4 times by now.
I have a record of it being changed twice, one at 60k back in 05, and one about a year ago which was about 120k. I also have records of maintenance statements where they have checked both and said they were ok, no need for them to be changed.
I'd change shops, looks aren't an indicator of when it should be changed.
For most fluids it's mileage, others time.
Looking back on the report, the filter and fluid hadn't been changed a year ago, it says "filter and crusher wash" and "all fluids topped off." Is that fine or does it need to be flushed and changed every 60k, not just refilled.
Fluid should be changed every 60K miles or less.
It needs to be changed, NOT flushed every 30-50,000 miles.
Ok, I’ll see what it takes to get it changed. Guess it hasn’t been changed in a 17 years damn. Thanks everybody.
