Dear Scotty,
I just bought a 2014 Honda CR-V, automatic transmission vehicle. I never driven an automatic transmission car before. I noticed that my car shifts gear very late (6000+ rpm) if i go full throttle. How can i make my car to shift earlier around 2500 rpm. Is this normal for an auto car? Can it be tuned?
Why are you giving it full throttle? They are designed to shift late into the rev band if you floor it.. So that’s normal behaviour for (I’m assuming 5 speed torque converter) your transmission.
An automatic transmission requires relatively little throttle inputs, compared to a traditional manual transmission.
If you want it to shift normally, use part throttle (1-2inches of pedal travel), and your CR-V should shift through the gears at ~ 2000rpm. If yours is a CVT, it’ll behave almost identical to a torque converter, at part throttle.
Try it out on your street & revert back with the results.
Please don’t floor the pedal in residential areas.
Thank you for your quick reply. I just wanted to try to go full throttle to see how it behaved. I live in town so usually only in the first three gears. Ok i am glad to hear that this is normal behaviour. Yes indeed its a 5 speed transmission. I am not sure if my car has CVT. I just read that it was only introduced in the 2015 model. So i guess my car has the regular automatic transmission? Ok i just got home. I will try the part throttle technique and will let you know the results.
It’s the 5 speed torque converter alright. Good luck & congratulations on your new acquisition!
