[Solved] Lexus Rx300 hissing noise over 4000 rpm

Hi Scotty,

I bought a pre-owned Lexus RX300 AWD year 2002 with 1MZ-FE V6 engine, it has 114592 miles on it. Recently there is a weird noise when overtaking vehicles at high speed. Hissing starts between 4000 to 5000rpm. It happens when ramping the engine without driving.

I have attached the video below. Does this mean the engine Piston Connecting Rod Bearing Shell worn out? Would overhaul the engine would potentially fix the issue?

Not getting to the root of this, will it cause further damage to the engine or crankshaft?

Thank you

Raymond

Check for vacuum leaks first. If you can’t find any, watch Scotty’s video on how to find the source of car noises in your car.

From the videos, it sounds like it isn’t metallic, but then again we are listening to it from inside the cabin.

Hoping it’s an easy fix for you, like a worn out hose.

Hi InThrustWeTrst,

Thanks for the comments. I have been bothered and search for lots of videos besides Scotty videos. There was not a single video that described the same issue, mostly knocking... Unless the knocking is the worse I can expect from this early sign?

When the hood is open, I can't hear anything significant. engine sounds very clean. Does this sound to me like some kind of Hydraulic pushing under high pressure?

Hi Gents,

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I have found the issue. it was a bad inlet hose that causes a vacuum leak.

Thank you again!

Excellent. I’m glad you found the issue so quickly. We are more than happy to help!

Got a code reader?  Live data.  Listened but couldn't discern first  vid sound.  Second one I heard abnormal but hard to say.  Live data while this happens should help identify area of issue.

Yea, I would try to stay out of that operating rpm when possible until resolved...not knowing the issue being impossible to tell if long term damage occurring...  but abnormal sounds ain't good.

Hey HillBilly,

Thanks for the comments. I don't have an OBD II Scanner. If I send to the workshop to check the code, what particular set of code am I looking for?

Any code but, live data is what I would want to see while it is running down the road during the 4k accel. Your autoparts store should read codes for free but can't do live data under the conditions needed.
If you want start doing repair, pick one up (see tool link top right). if not, just find you a good indy (ask at autoparts store).
There are other ways to troubleshoot, but guessing and throwing $(parts) at it isn't the way I like to do things.
