Has anyone tried Lysol in the cowl to disinfect and get rid of odour in vents?

I’ve heard Scotty talk about using Lysol to get rid of bad odors from the AC system. Has anyone on the forum actually tried this? How did it work? How much did you use?

Lastly, any side effects from the Lysol? Either from a human or the car?

I’ve tried like 4 big cans of Lysol. The odour on initial startup from the AC vents still hasn’t gone away.

So much for the hype..

Have you tried the foaming stuff that you spray into the evaporator through the drain tube?

Nope, but I was looking for such a product to try to tackle the evaporator directly. Thanks!

I haven't tried it myself, if you use it let us know how it works out.

You live in a humid place. I would recommend that you shut off your AC 5 minutes before you arrive at home, and just blast the vent on full at ambient temperature to help dry out the evaporator so it doesn't sit there moist and growing mildew.

I’m going to try out both the above suggestions and see which one solves the issue. Thank you, gentlemen.

Just get a can of Ozium at the auto parts store.  This stuff kills odors on the molecular level.

NFW. I wasn’t aware of this product. Thanks for the heads up.

I gather you have good first hand success with this product?

Yes.

I'm with @doc.

There is a plethora of products intended specifically for the purpose of sanitizing car HVAC systems, available at a reasonable price. Why mess with these "life hacks"? At least you know the products designed for automotive use won't damage any plastics and stuff like that. Plus they come with purpose made nozzles that let you get deep inside.

side effects are Lysol smells repulsive

GTK. Thanks.

let us know how it goes.

The Lysol smell stays for a long time. If you don't mind it, use it, otherwise you better off using correct products that members mentioned.

Lysol is great, if you don't mind your car smelling like the Chevron station men's room on a hot day.  If that's the case, just cop a urinal cake and leave it in your ashtray.

Or a busy hospital’s waiting room.

Whatever works is good!

Give Lysol a shot, its a disinfectant that non-alcohol based so its okay with plastic and rubber materials. Although use it sparingly and as an emergency option only. Always choose a disinfectant that is rated for use in automobiles. Another tip, replace your Cabin Air filter with some sort of activated charcoal in it. It will help deodorize the air that circulates.

Only a suggestion: Do this with all doors open, no pets, people, no smoking or open flame nearby. Do not inhale. Run the fan on high with recirculation door open and spray into recirc opening until you see or smell it come out the dash vents.  Then turn off the fan, stop the spray.  Let it sit a few minutes to kill bacteria.  The liquid should evaporate when fresh air goes through it by closing recirculation door, run the fan.
