hey scotty, i have a 2007 nissan altima 4 cylinder 2.5L. Mileage is 219651. I have 2 questions. First off, i got this car with a non-working transmission for cheap, fixed it, then my dad messed it up because he changed gears while driving on the highway. Anyways, the a/c worked perfectly. But because of complications , the car was sitting for about a year after that. After i fixed it, the ac stopped working. Took it to a mechanic, he said it was a leak. How can this happen. Can i use a stop leak or should i replace everything for 500 like he advised. Also the catalytic converter manifold code is bad, car makes rattling noise, should i get one from amazon? And how much is the average price for it to be replaced(back and front( because i don’t want to overpay. I know this was long, thank you for your time!

Just a wild guess here, but maybe refrigerant seeping out through 17-18 year-old seals?

You can use a stop leak if you want to destroy the AC system. If you want it to actually work for any length of time do a proper repair. Where did the mechanic say the leak is? Is it a major leak or just normal seepage over time? What is the "everything" that you have been advised to replace for $500?

What is the code? Do you know for a fact that it's the converter that's bad? Is that where the rattling noise is coming from? Don't buy critical items from Amazon, it's a hotbed of counterfeit and low-quality parts.

You need to obtain quotes from local mechanics.

For future reference please note that there should only be one car issue addressed per topic as indicated in the forum rules posted near the top of the main page.

A quick check of rockauto.com shows that if you need it a Walker exhaust manifold with converter costs about $322. (Walker is a leading brand for exhaust system components.) The 2nd converter costs about $108. That's for EPA certified components. If you are in the Peoples' Republic West, or another state that has entered into the CARB racket, the parts are more expensive. Then of course you have to add labor if not doing the job yourself.
