Toyota dealer wants $7500 to replace EGR valve & master cylinder

I have a 2005 Toyota Prius with about 308,000 miles (odometer stopped at 299,999, so I guessing). It stopped running. Toyota dealer says it needs a new EGR valve and Master Cylinder at a cost of $7500.  I have been advised I should repair it even at this high price rather than buy a new (used) car in the present car market, June 2022. Seems counter intuitive to me.  What is your advice?

The EGR valve costs about $320 and the master cylinder about $82.  Where in the world are they getting $7500 for this job?  Is this a Toyota dealer or a lawyers office?

I fell out of my seat when I saw the $7,500 quote.

Can you take your vehicle to an independent mechanic that also specializes in hybrids and get a 2nd opinion/quote?  $7,500 from the dealer is outrageous!

$7500 is outright theft. Get a quote from a good independent mechanic.

If possible, get the printed quote and share it here. I'm curious how they got to the $7500.

What do you mean by stopped running?

Does it start? Does it turn over?

A master cylinder TMK shouldn’t impact a car starting.

And I thought that that generation didn’t have an EGR? Or it did EGR differently than traditional EGR?

Please try an independent mechanic. The rationale the dealer is saying sounds insane.

What in the..?!

Tell the dealer, April 1st finished almost 3 months ago.

As many others have recommended, find yourself an honest independent mechanic.
