Reusing fresh oil... (It's stupid, but I gotta ask)

Scotty,

About 600 miles ago, I put some Kirkland/Warren Distribution 0W-20 in my kid's RAV4. The plastic oil filter housing was overtorqued by the dealership. Instead of breaking it off, I drained from the pan and the bottom of the housing and put the new oil in (which was darn near 100% of the oil it takes). The OEM filter had 4,800 miles on it.

I bought the OEM aluminum housing. I'm eager to do this now; if the container and the funnel are clean, is there any problem with reusing the oil from the pan and the center drain of the filter housing? (I would certainly want to avoid any backflow from the filter media itself.)

Sure, it's not old transmission fluid with a bunch of needed clutch grit, but is it acceptable to do? After all, I am being ecologically sensitive

😆

Are you talking about engine oil or transmission fluid?

Let;s try this one more time.  At the beginning of your question, you seem to be talking about engine oil.  At the end of your question, you are talking about transmission fluid.  Which one are you talking about?????

He’s asking about engine oil, but he was making a comparison to tranny oil

I was referring to something that Scotty has advocated on numerous occasions.

He has mentioned reusing transmission oil on quite a few videos when addressing people who have not changed their transmission fluid in a long time. You reuse it because there is a lot of grit from the clutches that, if you remove, the clutches will not be able to grab on and change gears.

Thus I wrote: "Sure, it's not old transmission fluid with a bunch of needed clutch grit..."

@futuresocalescapee - thanks for the clarification. Yes, Scotty does say reusing relatively clean ATF is ok.
