Hi Scotty,
I have a 2020 Corolla with 54k miles. It occasionally shudders at low speeds and while cornering. No check engine light. Other people have had this issue as well on other forums and the dealers have said “it’s normal.”
One mechanic I talked to said I should take it to the dealer anyway and have documentation that they looked at it, so that if it does go out after the warranty, I’ll have something to fight with. Does this ever work?
My only options are to take it to the dealer, pay them $150 and hope it’s a warranty fix so that they can refund me, or risk them lying and saying it’s something unrelated and then keeping the money
or just spend $60 on new OEM tranny fluid and do a drain and fill myself (with some no slip Lucas oil if that exists for CVT?)
- Are there any other DIY things that might cause this? Fuel filter and spark plugs have never been changed, but the car idles perfectly.
Yes take it in and make sure they give you the latest software
NEVER trust a dealer.
Yes you should get a paper that says you went to Toyota to complain about that issue.
You’ll definitely have to replace the gearbox sometime in the future, and you having prof that you took it to Toyota and that it broke during the warranty period - may help you when it’ll be time for a new tranny.
Although, if possible, I’d also suggest getting rid of it while used prices are high and just getting something that doesn’t have a CVT.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a Toyota or a LADA CVT - the laws of physics still apply (and longevity is often similar)
on the bright side Mazda has good conventional automatics (note that the latest Mazda3 ranks a bit low on reliability, other models should be great) and the Camry is offered with a conventional 8 speed auto that seems to be alright so far.

Also please mention your engine displacement or CVT type (w/ launch gear, or W/O)
