Spark plugs a MUST with new ignition coils?

Scotty,

I replaced my spark plugs 6 months ago on my 2008 Toy. 4runner V6, 4x4, with OEM iridium plugs, at 210,000 miles.
I do regular oil changes, air filters, MAF cleanings thanks to you!

I’m about to install new Denso ignition coils on this old boy—should I replace the spark plugs again?
(I do rough, all city driving, year round, little bit of towing, and it’s cold up here in Minnesota).

Thanks for the Wisdom.

Those plugs should be good for about 120000 miles, there is no reason to replace them so soon. Good luck.

@oldandy I would agree—my only thought: with only owning this bad boy for a year, would the slightest bit of oil, or corrosion warrant replacing? Plugs are cheaper than engine damage? Hope to put 300-400,000 miles on this bad boy….

If enough oil is getting into the combustion chamber to foul out the plugs, you would have to address that rather than constantly changing the plugs. It doesn't sound like you are experiencing that kind of problem, your engine would misfire. Good luck.

@oldandy thanks boss!

Hypothetically if the plugs are oily, what is next steps?

The first thing would be to check the PVC valve to see if it is clogged up and, if so, replace it. If not, or if the condition persists, do wet/dry compression testing of each cylinder. Burning some oil is not uncommon with the mileage on your engine but the plugs should not be wet with oil.
