Hi I have a Lexus is200 from 2001 and it’s got a misfire that will not throw an engine light. Well it did at one point and it was P0420 bank 1 below efficiency but I cleared the light like a muppet.
my mechanic wants me to wait until the light comes back on so he can get data as it’s showing no data at the minute
what can be the problem? The engine is (2.0 1GFE 6 cylinder 154bhp) 4 speed automatic
I have changed all 6 spark plugs, air filter, used fuel injector cleaner, catalyst cleaner and still have no luck! I run 95Ron fuel that’s fine for my car.
ps the car only stutters after 30 minutes of driving and between 30mph/40mins. It will only misfire for 1 or 2 seconds then will return back to normal until a drive again. also the exhaust smells eggy upon cold starts, and smells like a small amount of fuel when engine is fully warmed up.
I love this car and would like to keep her on the road 🙁
if you want more information DM me on Instagram too [personal info redacted]
thanks

On a vehicle that old it would be a good idea to verify the engine condition with a compression test and/or leakdown test.
The engine is in really good condition. It Doesn’t burn a drop of oil and has full service history with 105,000 miles on it
It is the original engine with 1 previous owner and runs silky smooth apart from the random missfire while the engine is hot and driving at 30/40mph
Compression problems, which can cause misfires. may be caused by valve and camshaft problems as well as worn piston rings, and that would not cause oil burning or knocking. The engine may well be OK but without testing that can't be known for sure.
Gas smell could be coming from a malfunctioning EVAP system, ie, gas cap, charcoal canister, valve solenoid. When did you change out that 21 year old fuel filter last? It's in the tank.
If the engine is still misfiring, it is NOT in "really good condition." It's a contradiction.
