Strange Engine Sputtering while Idling

Hey Scotty! I've been having a strange problem with my 02 Camry 2.4L (216k miles).

Whenever I do a hard acceleration or drive at higher speeds and then come to a stop, the engine starts doing a little sputtering but then goes away after a few minutes of driving at slower speeds.

I've changed the sparkplugs and coils recently, and the fuel pump and filter I changed about 4 years ago, and all are Toyota OEM parts, but none of those things have solved my issue.

I'm thinking maybe it's a fuel injector problem? I bought the car 5 years ago at 150k miles and I'm sure they've never been changed.

I do have a new code that came up about 3 months ago P0442 EVAP system leak detected (small leak) but I did check around the fuel tank under my vehicle, and the fuel filler neck and there are no visible exterior leaks. I changed the fuel cap and removed the code but it came back.

I'm thinking maybe it is a combination of fuel problems, like the charcoal canister and the injectors.

I have a BlueDriver obd2 reader and I don't know if it reads live data

As @imperator noted you want to look at short term fuel trim and long term fuel trims. Here's a link to a support video from BlueDriver on how to enable and view live data: https://youtu.be/nPWzzDckghc?t=4

@hixster Thank you! That was helpful, I linked in the following a screen recording of the live data while idling in Park with the A/C off (sorry, I just have no idea how to read this): https://youtube.com/shorts/K_uli5CadCI?si=x1spJshQ5zNbhqaP

@david-masterdd-99 Often when an engine stutters at idle because it's not getting enough fuel. So your fuel trim would reflect this by showing a high positive value, ie, a lean condition. Your fuel trims look fine as recorded. Here's something that should help you in interpreting fuel trim values: https://trade.mechanic.com.au/news/understanding-short-term-and-long-term-fuel-trims1

@david-masterdd-99 was that recorded during the sputtering?

@david-masterdd-99 With the your BlueDriver plugged in, replicate the conditions(driving) that causes the issue. Keep your BD phone app handy and check the live data when it sputters. The BlueDriver "autologs" data as soon as you start checking the live data and that report can be forwarded via email to yourself.

it definitely does. Take a look at your fuel trims. If they're high your fuel pump is probably going out and the next step is to measure fuel pressure.

P0442 EVAP system leak detected... there are no visible exterior leaks.

I just noticed this. leaks can be hard to see. check properly with a smoke machine. The engine could be leaking vacuum.

P0442 diagnosis:

Anything suspicious in live data?

@chucktobias I have a BlueDriver obd2 reader and I don't know if it reads live data. Are there any numbers that I should be worried about seeing?

You can look for the obvious things like fuel trims, sensor outputs, ignition timing, and system voltage to start.
