Dear Scotty

I recently bought a 2021 Suzuki Dzire with Suzuki's AGS system. They claim that it is better than automatic. It saves fuel consumption and less cost on maintenance. I want to hear you opinion on this system. Is it reliable or any better from automatic?

Thank you.

Who claims it’s better than a conventional automatic?

it's basically a "budget" automatic for developing nations like India

It’s an automated manual transmission, riddled with issues.

As @mountainmanjoe says, it’s targeted towards developing markets.

If you haven’t noticed already, the gearshifts aren’t smooth at all, when compared to a conventional torque converter automatic or CVT and I hope you enjoy the constant head nods..

Fingers crossed yours doesn’t break prematurely. The owners of this transmission in India (across all OEMs which use the AMT) are constantly facing issues -

Does @dan have an opinion on this?

Thank you for sharing your view .
The constant head node exists. I was concerned when I bought the car but these days I managed to adjust my pedal input (gas), observing when the gear shifts occur by looking at the RPM and sound of the engine. Now it is registered on muscle memory. I feel like it's just the clutch and the gear shift that is automated. I'm hoping it to last a while without a problem.

No worries. For new technology which has a history of issues like this, it’s a good idea to buy extended warranty, just incase you face any unforeseen issues. All the best.
