Thoughts on Subaru and Mazda hybrids?

ok so we know Toyota and Honda are still king when it comes to hybrids. How are the other Japanese hybrids? Nissan’s EV technology has been around for a long time being one of the first, but if I remember correctly, hybrids use CVTs and we know how those jatco CVTs are. What about Mazda and Subaru hybrids?

edit: let’s just say last 10ish years only

Hybrids use all sorts of transmissions: eCVT, CVT, automatic, and even some manual transmissions.

Toyota Hybrids use mainly eCVT, which is a planetary gear set as opposed to a traditional CVT which is belt driven. Their new truck hybrids used a traditional automatic transmission.

Subaru and Mazda are kinda weird. For the most part, their hybrid technology is NOT eCVT. But if it’s an eCVT, it is most likely a Toyota Hybird drivetrain and/or transmission inside the Subaru or Mazda.

The Mazda CX-50 hybrid is basically a RAV4 hybrid underneath. It uses the Toyota hybrid drivetrain. So just judging on Toyota’s record, the CX-50 hybrid would probably be the most time tested.

Their other hybrids are mild hybrids, not full hybrids.

Older Nissan hybrid technology like in older Altima hybrids also used the Toyota eCVT technology. Not sure about the new one.

@kaizen thanks for explaining the difference between CVT and eCVT. I was actually going to ask about that
