Toyota / Lexus Turbos

Scotty,

I watched a review of yours for a Lexus LS500 recently.  (I don't recall the year, but it had a V8.)  You said that it is a great car, and that the turbos will last forever, since Lexus has done a great job with turbo technology.  I then saw a comment you made about the upcoming Tundra, and you said that since it has two turbos and a V6, you would suggest getting a 2021 Tundra with the big V8.  I'm curious why you favor the Lexus with the turbos but not the Tundra with the turbos.  Is it because the Lexus has a V8 and the Tundra will have a V6?  Is it because the Lexus turbo is different / better than the turbo used by Toyota?  Or is it because one is a car and one is a truck?

Full disclosure:  I'm a big fan of Toyota / Lexus.  Currently have a 2013 RX350 and a 2012 Tundra w/5.7L.  Also have 2009 and 2010 RAV4s, both with V6 engines.  Nice little hot rods, driven by my adult children still in school.

There are no twin turbo V8 in current Toyota/Lexus products, just twin turbo V6.  That engine will see less strain/load in a sedan (the LS500) than a truck meant to tow, carry loads.  So far that engine in the LS500 (which is twin turbo V6) seems to be doing OK (LS500 came out for 2018 model year), but long term issues/longevity not so clear yet.  Give it more time before we can reach a verdict.

A V6 turbo is a different story than a V8 turbo. It does not have to do with one being a car and one being a truck. Turbo-charged engines ware out faster than naturally aspirated engines. A V6 turbo may have the same power or more than a NA V8 but it won't hold up it's longevity when compared with the two.

Thanks for the reply.

My use for a truck is to carry lumber for projects, and also to drive daily.  I never tow, nor to I load the bed with anything near its capacity.  In my case, would it matter?  If not, the use of a V6 w/turbos would seem to be a plus to me.  I would get better mileage and would not lose anything since I don't tow / haul.  And I also do not drive hard, so I wouldn't be spinning up the turbos (too often).

I guess time will tell.  I'm not currently in the market for anything, but wanted clarification of the videos I had seen recently.  I'll be anxious to see how the turbos and V6 hold up over time.

DayWalker, you are correct.  The LS 500 is a V6 w/twin turbos.  For some reason I thought it was a V8.

As I mentioned before, I'm not in need of a different vehicle.  The Lexus and the Toyota Tundra I have will last me many more years.  In that time, we will indeed learn about the reliability of the V6 w/turbos.  My Lexus has the 3.8L V6 (no turbos), and it is bullet-proof.  So if there is a weakness in the V6-turbo setup, most likely it will be the turbos or as a result of the turbos.  I know those 3.8L V6 engines last forever.

Thanks for your reply, and sorry for the mixup.  I didn't know that Toyota / Lexus had a 5.0L V6 in its engine selections.  I assumed that the 500 designation would be a V8.  I'll be more careful about assumptions.
