Hi I've noticed a strange rattling sound while my car is idling, noise is corresponding with the engine speed. It's getting more frequent but not louder with rpm increase. 1.8 vavlematic, 6 speed manual with 40k miles, no trouble codes on the computer.

Is this a bad/ streached timing chain noise or what? But bad timing chain in 40k miles toyota?

After replacing whole timing chain set everything is nice and smooth.

Thanks for posting back with the (expensive) fix!

Timing chains rarely go out that soon but the tensioners can stick if they get carboned up try an engine flush first that can often fix it. If not you'd have to have a mechanic tear down the engine and find out what is physically broken

Wow, Scotty himself, I'm blessed 🙂 Thanks Scotty! About engine flush, I've kinda done that. I've changed my engine oil and changed it again after 800 miles with the new one. No improvement :-/ btw please check this video, can this be a foreshadow of some catastrophic engine failure https://youtu.be/9MV10LVfvFI or just my tachometer is acting up it... rpm needel is boucing in neutral and while driving with steady rpm . Car drives normally, doesn't jerk, stall etc. This is the first time that I have some issiues with toyota. Car is well maintained since new. Thanks again. All the best

Sounds to me like the typical vacuum pump noise on the ZR engine (normal operation as far as I know)

It's a quirk of the Toyota ValveMatic system

Little follow up. I took my car to the dealership. Next Wednesday my whole timing chain set is going to be replaced, including guide, tensioner, orings plus oil and filters etc. Parts and labour around 1200 dollars... I'm quite disappointed... Car is very well maintained since it was new... 40k miles and chain is busted... I can smell a lemon :-/

Are they sure it's the chain? Chains are not the best on the 2ZR-FAE but I think the dealership are clowns.
I guess we'll know when you get the car back, if the dealership is wrong and it sounds the exact same, demand a refund.

Would love to know if that was actually the issue.

So I took my car to the dealership. I'm quite surprised. They have found that both camshaft seals are leaking, crankshaft seal is leaking also. Plus timing chain rail guides are worn... So they need few days to get it done. Anyway for this mileage and service history I'm very disappointed... Car was always very well serviced and never abused.

Do you have evidence that your routine oil changes were actually performed since the beginning? Or did they just charge you for fantasy engine oil changes?

Can you send a sample of the oil to an oil analysis laboratory?

I think you need to lawyer up on this once and ask the dealer to fix everything under warranty.

No bogus oil changes. 100% positive on that. But, maybe oil quality used by dealer was sh!#t...
