I own a 2009 Toyota Tacoma. 4 Cyl. manual 4X4. I bought it with 13,000 miles. I have had all regular maintenance done on it at a Toyota dealer so I have good records. I heard a noise coming from transmission. Brought it to Toyota dealer and was told the warranty would cover a new transmission and clutch work. Now my Taco has 95,000 miles. The other day shifted into 1st and then 2nd. "BOOM...GRRRRRrrrRRRrrrrRRR" While trouble shooting I tried all gears 1-5 & R. No movement at all. Engine sounds fine, idles in neutral with clutch pressed and not pressed. Phone call to Toyota, spoke with mechanic and he thinks the shaft in the transmission broke. I am having my truck towed to a transmission shop this time instead of the dealer. What are your thoughts based on the information i gave you?
With the engine not running, can you put in any of the gears? If so it might be a problem with the clutch. Had a defective clutch on 87 turbo-coupe that had a similar failure as yours. Hope it's that and not the transmission. Good Luck
boom grrr could be a lot of things. I will go with what the Toyota mechanic said.
It doesn't sound good. I'd say his assessment is probably correct.
Im a little confused. Did you get a new transmission at 13k under warranty? And what happens if you put it in first gear now with the engine not running? Will it go into gear? It could be as simple as a broken shifter linkage.
The transmission shop just started working on her today. Stated that when he drained the transmission fluid metal pieces came out. More to come, will update. The 1st transmission, which had 13,000 miles on it was replaced do to worn Synchro's. Whether it could have been fixed, idk, the truck was still under warranty so maybe Toyota was just looking for a job to milk? This current transmission has about 75k miles.
What should i expect to pay for a transmission and clutch for this 09 Tacoma? Any red flags i should be on the lookout for, seling things i don't need? So far I'm happy with their service, local mom and pop shop.
Sorry to hear that...not typical for a Taco trans to grenade like that. Found these quick estimates: Clutch kit about $350 +/-, transmission about $2,000 +/-. then there's the labor and miscellaneous parts ?? Good Luck
Please keep updated on the result. You said it was the 4 cyl. Wonder if its due to 4 cyl? At original 13,000 mark, seems odd. And then again? Contact Toyota Corporation and check the recalls.
