Used Maserati

Hey Scott, love your show. So my question is about a car manufacturer I know very little about. I’ve been looking to buy a new car and came across a 2015 Maserati Ghibli S Q4 with 35k miles being sold at a used dealership for 28k$ I’ve always loved Italian sports cars but don’t know anything about buying and owning one. Is this a good every day car or a huge money pit waiting to happen? I was also looking at 2012 Quattrosport S with 17k miles as well. Thanks Scott

Maserati/Italian car for daily driver and at that price no way I would even think about it, let alone owning one.

No....don't do it. Maserati/Italian cars and "good every day car" don't go hand in hand. They look great, but that's about it unless you have deep pockets to fix/maintain them.

Hi,
First of all, I'd like to point out that
I’ve always loved Italian sports cars but don’t know anything about buying and owning one

Loving Italian cars without owning one, is like "loving skiing without ever holding a pair of skis"

That is the thing about Italian cars, you like them - until you own one.

From my experience with them, the only joy you can get out of owning such a car is either from simply knowing you own a fancy thing, or from "flexing".

it's really like owning a watch (but one that depreciates like mad and requires constant, never-ending, monetary investments)

Is this a good every day car or a huge money pit waiting to happen?

Well, it's not waiting to happen. Most Italian cars I know, including very inexpensive ones, have been money pits their entire life.

The Ghibli has a Ferrari made engine and doesn't share many parts with other brands - I do not think that anything about that car is good for everyday use.

There's a reason why that $80,000+++ car got down to under 35% of it's MSRP in just a few years and only 35k miles.

Cause quite honestly, if all you want to have is a good badge on your hood, just get a Lexus.

That is a very bad idea for anyone who is not quite wealthy.

Do you know what is the best Maserati? The one your neighbor has.

If I remember correctly Maserati was voted worst car ever made for multiple years. There know to be cheaply made and always breaking down. They aren't reliable at all.  I've seen a few for sale months back in New Jersey with that Mileage selling for $15,000.00 to $17,000.00.  I also saw one 6 months ago that had 18,000 miles selling for $21,000.00

If you're a doctor or lawyer, go ahead....a normal person, no European cars. By far the biggest buyers locally are drug dealers which I found comical. First it was 8 series BMWs then black Maseratis with vanity plates. A guy in my complex had a custom painted pearl blue one, sure enough the DEA eventually came knocking😄

One of the surgeons I went to had a bunch of them, he was happy to sing about them but he wouldn't answer me when I asked about upkeep so that should tell you something.

As a toy that you drive occasionally maybe but as an everyday driver? Hell no! Too expensive for a 7 seven-year-old car as well.

One of my friends who happens to be a crown prince's son from Kuwait has one of these 2012 model Maserati's.

He is not a big fan but he keeps it since it has a sentimental value due to it being his dads gift before his passing.

Despite running only 50000 KM and used only on weekends, the trade in value or market value is 7000 Kd max (22000 USD).

He loves his daily driver Lexus LX 2012 model running 308000 KM and still going strong.

The logistic manager at Maserati is my friend and he says that the main business more than the car sales is from the consumable parts which are actually designed in a way where you cant easily do with aftermarket parts nor have it done easily outside.

If you really are into the badge thing, get a Lexus like DAN had advised. They are well built, strong and lasts much much more long! Even the styling is more more better than a lot of the other Italian rivals.!
