What model year Japanese sedan should I buy used?

Hi all,

Long story short I had a great 2013 Corolla S that got totalled a few weeks ago and I'm in the market for a replacement. I'm broadening my horizons since the market is pricier than when I bought my car a year ago, and the offerings available aren't as plentiful as before so it's not as easy to find a comparable car.

What I'm looking for is:

  • Reliability
  • Longevity (hoping for 10-15 years of driving with minimal but regular maintenance)
  • Comfort in the seat
  • Around 9.6k USD/ 12k CAD OTD, willing to do up to 16k/20k USD/CAD for a car with a lot of life left in it

I know the Corolla/Camry and Civic/Accord are obvious choices but I'm having trouble deciding on model years that are best for me. I liked my corolla but have been curious about a midsize sedan after being knocked so easily in my Corolla. I have around 25k to my name and want to buy something that I won't have to worry about as an early career professional while I grind and save. I'll be living at home for the next year or two before I plan to move out as well.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My top pick right now has been a 2017 camry SE with 40k on it for 21.5k CAD OTD because I figure it's basically brand new and could drive for over 15 years if I treat it right.

For what it's worth, I would go drive a comparably priced Accord. My last two cars were an 07 Accord and a 2014 Camry. While I love my Toyotas (I've had like 8 now), I have to admit that the older Accord had the edge in almost every way. It was hands down the better driving car. The steering was precise with good feel for the road, and it was quicker (or at least snappier on the down shifts). Don't know if the newer ones are still that good, but you might want to try one if you haven't yet.
