| '07 Honda Odyssey Looking to Upgrade | 24Relevance | 5 years ago | jeremythecamel | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hey Scotty! I have a family of 6 that we cart around in a 2007 Honda odyssey with 206,000 miles. We're coming up on the time for a water pump/timing belt swap and the car is shuddering most times when I apply brakes. We are tempted to move on to a newer model, a 2021 Toyota sienna, for the MPG and current safety features etc. We put about 20k miles on our van a year. I know you say to hold on to cars, but I was just wanting your opinion on this new Toyota Hybrid family hauler and longevity of our oldish odyssey. Thanks! | |||||
| Should I trade in my 2016 Honda Odyssey for a sedan? | 24Relevance | 5 years ago | Antar24 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I have a 2002 Toyota sienna, a 2009 Honda Civic, and a 2016 Honda odyssey. I'm thinking about trading in my odyssey because I don't use it that much and I believe that I will have positive equity that I can use to buy a sedan. This sedan is for my son as he is going to have a job soon, so should I trade it in, and if so, which used Honda should I get? Thanks. | |||||
| How do I fix hard shifting Odyssey | 25Relevance | 5 years ago | jhamburger | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Thanks for taking the time to look at this. Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF): My paid-off 2019 Honda odyssey EX with 18,602 miles (29,938 km) is having transmission problems - really hard shifting, problems accelerating and decelerating, and clunking/knocking when shifting. Is this common? Have you heard anything about this? I'm living overseas at the moment for work - how would you go about addressing this? How big of a fight do I have ahead of me (how much antacid will I need to buy)? Back story So I have a 2019 Honda odyssey I bought new from a Honda dealer in Dulles, Virginia (AutoNation Honda); wasn't the greatest experience but different story for different day. The vehicle has 18,602 miles (29,938 km). A little under a year ago I started noticing "hiccups" with the transmission while driving. I thought it was just me, but after a while it became apparent that there was something happening with the vehicle. It would shift extremely hard, sometimes even knocking with a clunk. Also, it wouldn't accelerate or decelerate properly on occasion. I contacted Honda about some other related issues that were related to a recall and mentioned this to them. I also mentioned that I currently live overseas with my job and had the vehicle shipped to me. It was at that time I found out that warranties are no longer valid once the vehicle leaves the United States....didn't know that little tidbit. They said any repairs would be out of pocket but if the vehicle gets sent back to the United States the warranty would start back up but only with the remaining years on it had the vehicle not been shipped out of the United States. The issue only happens on occasion but its happened enough to finally get me angry. I did a quick Google search and found out that there has been an issue with the 2018/2019 transmission and the van going into park while driving. That isn't the issue I had. I did find, however, a lawsuit that a woman brought against Honda (Browning, et al., v. American Honda Motor Company., Inc, et al.) for the same exact issues my Honda is having ( ). Like I said, I'm currently living overseas on a contract for work so bringing it to the Honda dealership I purchased it from won't happen. There is a Honda dealership out here, however, with it being out of warranty I'd rather not have to drop $2,000 for a new transmission. From my research, it seems that's Honda's fix - putting in a new crappy transmission to replace the current crappy transmission (excuse my language). I've also read of instances where even with the new transmissions, the engine still blew around 25,000 miles. I plan on contacting the Honda dealership where I purchased it from, but I'm not really expecting much. My wife and I were going over a few scenarios: selling it locally to someone after telling them about the transmission issue so we have full disclosure, parking it and waiting until Honda issues a full recall (good luck), or dumping money into it for inspections, replacements, all that stuff. What do you recommend sir and how much of a ruckus should I be raising because to say that I'm upset a brand new, paid off Honda is giving me mechanical problems is to put it mildly. Thanks for your help. | |||||

| Hello, Mr. Scotty Kilmer and Friends I know y'all didn't like Honda odyssey, especially the one that Made In Lincoln, Alabama, U.S. 'cause they having weak Automatic Transmission, as well as weak Cam on their V6 Engine that tend to wobble back and forth as they aged But my Uncle's Made In Sayama, Saitama, Japan 2008 Honda odyssey (K24A8 2.4L DOHC i-VTEC I4 NA) with 250k Miles/402k Kilometers is still Run Extremely Very Strong with Original Engine and Automatic Transmission when he bought it Brand-new in 2008, although he had to change Transmission Fluid and Filter every 20k miles/32k kilometers by using Drain and Fill method, as well as change the Engine Oil and Filter every 5k miles/8k kilometers There's any thoughts on those Particular odyssey to make it Last 500k miles/800k kilometers or more before something bad happens to either Engine or Transmission? Thank You and Stay Safe during the Holidays | |||||

| @alvin I agree there are many other components that can fail on the odyssey and it starts to become expensive. Sounds like your dad really likes his odyssey after all it is quite comfortable. | |||||
| RE: Mazda MPV opinions | 23Relevance | 5 years ago | billybob | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| No, the Dodge Caravan was the worst for Transmissions, and pretty much everything else really. The odyssey was definitely know to have transmission issues and the MPV did too. Having said that, if you can't afford a sienna and need a good second choice an odyssey or MPV would probably be your best bet. Having said that the sienna is the best by a huge margii which is why they are so expensive. | |||||

| ... to go with a sienna (not the new hybrid model) but in your case, absolutely no need to sell your odyssey if it's in good condition. Just change the ATF every 25k-30k miles and do the timing belt service every 7 years/105k miles. Google search VCMuzzler and look into disabling VCM. | |||||

| I would also go with a Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Highlander or Toyota sienna. The respective products by Honda are also good, but make sure you change your timing belt every 100k miles -they're interference engines, and if the belt breaks, pistons can hit the valves. Stay away from the Honda odyssey. Kia/Hyundai products burn oil with their more recent products, and they don't care. One quart of oil per 1,000 miles is "normal", to the dealers, it's not normal. My 1999 Ranger has 292k miles on it, and it leaks or burns that much oil in 5,000 miles. Toyota Gra ... | |||||

| ... blow up. I would avoid the Toyota sienna in terms of the early ones having oil sludge problems and newer ones from 2016-2020 have the 8-speed transmission which (at those models) were not the best transmission options. The new 2021 and 2022 ones have a new design and powertrain and the verdict on that is unknown. If you need a minivan in a pinch- try the Chrysler Pacifica. I test drove that vehicle and the 3.6 Pentastar engine can last well some time and ZF 9 speed transmission has improved. | |||||
| Answer to: 2020 Honda Cr v and 2020 Honda Odyssey | 23Relevance | 5 years ago | MrRangerZr1 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Honda quickly dropped the 9 speed, they realized their mistake. Now only in house honda 10-speed. So far the 5th gens are doing ok with some electronic issues like infotainment system going bad. Also, the new j series commonly have injector failure at early mileage. Both sienna and odyssey are good. The new sienna, too early to tell with the hybrid powertrain. | |||||

| See below: get the Toyota sienna. Btw, MY2016 and older had 6 gears (that’s the one I recommend); MY2017-2020 had 8 gears (still better than the odyssey). | |||||
