1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue Radiator fans not working

Hi Scotty,

I have a 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 89,000 miles and coolant light came on and A/C in car blows warm air. Coolant was low. And the 2 radiator fans won’t come on. Good tests with a power probe on the 2 fan motors, and the 3 relays and also good tests on the 3 circuit from the relays directly to the fan motors. Still not able to locate issue for why the fans are not coming on as they are supposed to. What do I need to check next? Thanks

  • Check the FAN1 FAN2 fuses (should get 12V on both legs)
  • Check the fan grounds (Lower left front of the engine, on the transaxle stud, next to the starter)
  • you may have air bubbles trapped in the cooling system from having low coolant, which can mess with the temperature sensor. Make sure you burp all the air out.

what did you test exactly on the motor?

good tests on the 3 circuit from the relays directly to the fan motors

there should be four circuits . Two per motor.

Thank you for your quick reply.
I checked both FAN1 & FAN2 fuses and did get 12V on both legs.

I checked both grounds at the fan plug, and they were good grounds using the power probe.

After adding coolant, I ran the engine for 30 minutes to remove any air bubbles that might be in the system, and to also make sure that the engine thermostat opened.

 It has a 3.4L V6 Automatic.

  • On the fan motors, I tested the continuity on both fan motors with a power probe and both fans run fine. Also, one fan motor has one circuit for the A/C system, and the other circuit is for a combination of the A/C and engine. The third circuit is for engine only.
  • Thanks.

try manually grounding the FAN1 relay coil, and see what happens. it's a little tricky because of access.

You can get these really handy troubleshooting testers. They plug right into the relay socket, and allow you to manually turn the circuit on and off with a switch.

Other than that, maybe you can wrap some thin wire around the relay terminal (should be #85) before plugging it in, and then use an jumper wire with aligator clips to ground that. The relay should click shut and turn on both fans at low speed.

unless the engine was swapped, it would have come with a 3.5L V6, or 3.8L V6
