80's Maserati Bi-Turbo

So, years ago in the 1980's I was driving in the Gold Coast in Chicago, and this car passed me going really fast - I noticed the engine sounded really strange, almost jet-like - which was nothing I've ever heard before. I sped up to catch up to the car, and saw it was a Maserati. When the car would change lanes it did so with an agility like I'd never seen.

Fast forward a bit and the band that got signed, and made some money. The first thing I did was head to the exotic car dealership to buy myself a Maserati. The salesman had me take it for a test drive, which was awesome; but then he said to me, "I would love to sell you this car, but believe me, if you buy it, it'll drain your entire bank account - it's REALLY high maintenance, and always needs some kind of repair; it's a fun car, but you're better off buying something more reliable - please, trust me on this one".

So I didn't buy it. But ever since it's been bothering me: Had I bought that Maserati Bi-Turbo would it have been that problematic? That expensive to own? That high-maintenance? I guess I want to know if ya'll think I made the right call. I always look for those old Bi-Turbos for sale, but never see any come on the market.

These days I found I can get one on Turo for a day, to just drive out in the country and enjoy it without the car payment!

Anyway, thank you for you help - I've always wondered how different my life would have been with that car, ya know?

It sounds like you ran into a unicorn - an honest car salesman. He was right, unless you have extremely deep pockets you do not want to own one of those cars. If you can rent one for a day occasionally to get it out of your system that sounds like a good idea.

Borrowing one without the payments sounds like a good idea.

Probably the most honest salesman I have ever heard of and that too from an exotic car dealership. He is 100% right, those Maserati Biturbos will drain your bank account with all the electronics, turbos failing, etc. unless you have an endless supply of money. You definitely should get something more reliable.
