What is the best year to get for the subaru wrx with the cvt transmission?

It depends.

You're buying a used car, the kind that gets beat to death..

Virtually no one buys a 260 horsepower AWD Subbie sporty sedan to be nice to it.

 

Usually the Linetronic TR690 that was installed on the previous generation wasn't too bad,

But this is a WRX so no one knows how hard it was driven and what's left of that poor CVT.

Although the new one is supposedly not as much of a slush box as the old one.

 

Basically what ever one you can find that wasn't abused.

I am not a big fan of the large infotainment screen

Well you're in luck, neither screen on the WRX is really that large, the bottom always shows AC controls and home and return buttons - in car play the usable area is tiny. All of the Subaru screens are "mid".

Also I want to ask if there's a particular reason why you're looking at a WRX? In Edmunds test the 2022 CVT WRX did 0-60 in 6.0 seconds. It's not fast, it's not practical, it's not good on economy - it's not gear overall...

A Corolla SE Apex does it in 7.3 (1.3 sec) difference while also having a reliable 2.0L and a launch gear for traffic and has pretty good economy. Or y'know a Prius Prime AWD is only 0.7 seconds slower while also 54 mpg and having a near indestructible eCVT.

I've got friends who recommended the wrx, somewhat reliable and not that hight on cost of ownership. There are also some mods you can do on it. And to be totally honest I had not looked at any toyota cars as they are quite common and I was looking for something that stood out a little bit more. I had only looked at the gr86 but not enough space for my liking as I would need a second row that is comfortable for passangers. The se apex is a really good recommendation, it stands out from other corollas and its a extremely reliable performance compact sedan. I was also looking at the new intengras but they are quite new.

To me "downgrading to a car that gets bad fuel economy and is only 'somewhat reliable' because you're looking for 'looking for something that stood out a little bit more' " - sounds like a bad idea.

On the Integra, on the only automatic variant - it's just a tiny 1.5L engine with 1.23 bar of boost.
And all of that is mated to an old and questionable CVT...
The result is that despite having 200 horsepower it does 0-60-mph in 7.6 seconds.
So it's slower than a Corolla APEX that's dead reliable and gets great fuel economy

Out of all options so far the latest generation (I think it's 2020-up) Corolla APEX sounds best - you'll want to find one that wasn't "moded" and one that was used just as a regular car and not because of it's sportiness.
It's better to add stuff like a ducktail and a diffuser yourself, much better than buying a car with it - as people who put that on their cars tend to drive them hard.

Get a mechanic to check it out before purchase, and make sure to replace engine oil every 5k miles at most and CVT fluid every 20k-30k (the more frequently the better).

Subaru CVTs had some teething issues and have been gradually improved. Bottom line is simple: get the newest one you can afford. 
PS: they didn’t sell many, so your choices may be limited. Also, no matter what they tell you, change the CVT fluid at 100,000 miles at the latest. 

Oh ok great. I know the manual version is 100 times better but it is more conventional for me as I run into a lot of traffic and stops. I was looking at the 2022 wrx but I am not a big fan of the large infotainment screen.

I had a 2018 WRX, and it was a blast on mountain roads. But commuting really was a chore, and if traffic was backed up it was miserable. If it was just my weekend car I’d take the manual, but as a daily the CVT makes a lot of sense.
