Should I change my transmission fluid?

I recently purchased a 2017 Toyota Camry with 103,000 miles it's an automatic it runs drives and shifts like new. It has had regular oil changes every 5,000 mile per Carfax. Transmission fluid has never been changed. Should i change it? Get it changed and flushed? No codes. No noises, runs drives like new.

Thanks

if you want to know something about a Toyota, ask a Toyota dealer.

this forum is as useless

Exactly right.

  • We don't know the history of the vehicle or watch how you drive it.
  • We didn't test drive your vehicle to see how the transmission shifts are.
  • We don't know what your fluid looks like.
  • We didn't run any diagnostics.

The best answer we can give is the FAQ article that was suggested to you. But ultimately the decision should be made based on facts and data FROM YOUR CAR, by somebody experienced, ideally a transmission tech, not opinions on the internet. Good luck. 🙂

See the FAQ.

Apparently if you want to know something about a Toyota, ask a Toyota dealer. Had mine drained, and filled.

If you actually read the FAQ and not just blow it off as "useless information", you might've learned something.

Toyota, or really any manufacturer's vehicle, will tell you "you never need to change the transmission fluid. It's good for the "lifetime" of the car." The powertrain warranty expires after 5 years or 60,000 miles. If it breaks after the warranty, it's on you.

Toyota dealers won't change transmission fluid unless you force them to. My wife has a 2017 Mustang with an automatic. The owner's manual says you need to change the transmission fluid once every 150k miles. The technician kicked and screamed that it wasn't time, yet,t hen the tech flushed the transmission, when I told them it was supposed be a drain and fill. They didn't even bother to change the transmission filter.

Go ahead and trust "technicians" if you want. I'm sure they know better than Scotty, who's been in this business for over 50 years.

Your mileage is barely above what is often recommended by toyota to change it.

You should be fine to go ahead and do it, I have changed several Toyota's of mine at that mileage, and higher.

If it has a CVT transmission, that is different, and totally fine to change.

Apparently if you want to know something about a Toyota, ask a Toyota dealer. Had mine drained, and filled. Drove it to Tampa Florida, and back. No problems. I didn't expect any insight on this forum. IMO this forum is as useless as 90% of the YouTube videos. Thanks for the information lol!

Dealerships can have useful information, but sometimes they are also misleading. For instance, they will tell you a Toyota CVT has "lifetime fluid". They don't say that in other countries, because what they mean is, when the transmission dies, that was the lifetime, at least that is what Subaru does, pretty sure Toyota is the same. I would prefer that the lifetime of my transmission outlive the rest of the car.
