I have a 1994 Toyota Celica ST with 185,000KM. Everything is working fine except for the radio antenna, which raises about halfway and then makes an awful noise and continues trying to extend. What would you recommend I try?
I would just replace it with a plain ordinary flexi antenna. Who needs that nonsense.
I would take apart the entire motor and see what's broken. Pray that the telescoping mast is the issue. If the housing and/or motor is broken then you'll have to replace the whole part.
Sounds good, thank you. If I can't fix it with WD40 that'll be my next step. Thank you!
If you could have someone manually extend the antennae while you power it up them squirt some WD40 on it and clean the crud out. Hopefully, the gear wheel mechanism (which is probably plastic) hasn't broken. Then cycle it a few times. OEM replacement is about $150 while aftermarket replacement is about $50.
Awesome thank you, I'll give that a shot. I'm guessing because it extends most of the way just fine that is probably all it needs. Thanks again!
The last car I had with one of those antennas, I got the antenna up full length, then disconnected the electrical feed to the antenna motor. The only reason for the antenna to retract is for car washes, and I wash my cars with a bucket and hose.
I had those on 4 of my 7 Cadillacs. I couldn't tell that they offered any benefit over a standard one other than the car wash thing. Instead of WD-40, use silicone spray. It will last longer. If you don't want to go the standard route, you can get one that tapes onto the interior of the windshield up at the top.
