2016 Hyundai Sonata, 2.4 L GDI (non-turbo), automatic, 103,xxx miles.
OBD-II codes: P200A, P016B.
Symptoms: gas mileage dropped about 10 mpg to 25mpg, acceleration decreased.
Recent maintenance: Chevron Techron fuel treatment, CRC GDI Spray Valve Cleaner, oil change due in 200 miles (I change every 5,000 miles).
Yesterday, I used a can of CRC GDI Spray Valve Cleaner in my vehicle. I have done this several times in the past without issue. Performance-wise the car did fine on the highway drive following the cold soak of the cleaner. I did notice a rattle at 3k+ RPM at the onset of the engine speed increase. The rattle sounded like a rock inside an empty Coke can being shaken really fast. This sound also happened after the last application of the spray cleaner as well. I use the cleaner prior to oil changes in an effort to help reduce valve carbonisation. No engine light was triggered immediately after either highway drive.
Today when I started the car, the engine light was on. The only noticeable change was a slight decrease in acceleration. Also, my MPG dropped about 10 MPG below what I typically average.
A check of the codes at an auto parts store listed the ones above, P200A and P016B. The auto parts guy said the variable charge motion actuator (VVT system) needed to be replaced.
I did locate a TSB from Hyundai (16-01-004-1) regarding this issue.
What should my next steps be? I don't have a scan tool, and one of the videos I watched stated that the car's learning function needed to be reset following an install of the actuator. The actual replacement didn't appear too difficult though.
The car is out of warranty. How do TSBs work? Will the dealership do anything about the issue, or is it my responsibility? I've never dealt with a TSB issue, only actual recalls.
TSB's are for informational purposes
They're just updates with new information that surfaces after the service publications have gone to print.
OK I just looked up your particular TSB, and this one is special. Read the box where it says *IMPORTANT*

There is a campaign to fix it.
I noticed that. Does that mean they should fix it? I just called the dealership, and (of course) they said there wasn't anything they could do under that TSB.
it says right there in black on white:
"Dealers must perform this Service Campaign on all affected vehicles ... whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair."
it doesn't surprise me at all they're trying to weasel out of it. call Hyundai corporate.
Just called corporate. They said my VIN is not covered under that TSB (despite exhibiting all the symptoms listed in the TSB to a T).
Scoundrels. I sympathize with you , man. Let it be a lesson about Hyundai I guess.
For sure! I only wished I had starting watching Scotty a year earlier. Would've never bought the "endless money pit" to begin with. Will be the first and last Hyundai I ever buy.
Thanks for your help though!
